What really is important for me is the exploration - the discovery of new and interesting things, places, people and whatever else is out there. I am always looking for excellent new books to read and particularly hate reading bad books, or books that I, well, hate. Which is why I'm here. Hoping that Shelfari and the community can help guide me... more »

Intrigued with your review of Child of God - not sure if I want to read it though. I've loved some of his books but found others too grim.

Come to the Flash Harry group for questions about the first Flashman novel....he's definitely not a politically correct "hero"

ZOOTER, I think you said you were interested in reading the Flashman series. We'll start with the first one: Flashman.

I will post questions or comments during the first week of May.
I WILL POST THE QUESTIONS ON ANOTHER GROUP DISCUSSION BOARD. THE GROUP IS CALLED "FLASH HARRY".

LOOK FOR IT NOW SO YOU KNOW WHERE I'M GOING.

Zooter 0 save me some research: if Redcoat the start of a new series, a stand alone, or a part of a series already started?

Have a few more Sharpe's to go, so I'll soon be looking to start another Cromwell book/series.

Chris, it is a small detail; but, in order to not look too 'lubberly' could we perhaps correct the spelling of three of our discussion post headers. The first being "Group Memeber Introductions" to "Group Member Introductions." The second being "Rescources" to "Resources." Finally, "Dewey Lambin" to Dewey Lambdin." I think it would have us sailing a little closer to the wind. What say you? Cheers!

I agree--the first one, The Royal Flash.
Let's see who else signs on.....OK by me if it's just us two, but I hope for a couple more. Can you post it on your Age of Sail group?
Glad to have you with me....

Any interest in a group read of a Flashman novel? In an ad hoc group, outside of our usual ones (I think we can do that). A Flashman group exists, but fairly inactive, so....called Flash Harry.
Take a look at one or two of the novels and see what you think.....

That is funny, it came as an update from Shelfari that you were reading them. Maybe I didn't look at the date?

    Hi Zooter,
The Medieval Junkies group is trying to take a polling of its members, in order to determine the direction which the group should take. If you can, please spare us a few minutes of your time to participate. Thanks in advance, Ben

Zooter, I hope you'll read Morality Play. It's really good with a lot of things we could discuss--corruption, Christianity, baronial power--and then join in the discussion, even if it's not right away.

Post Captain is going much faster. I think it's a mix of getting used to O'Brian and already knowing the characters. His character development was slow in Master and Commander so I didn't really get invested in them until the latter part of the book.

I started Post Captain last night. I hope it goes faster for me than Master and Commander. I plan to devote a half hour block of time early in the day for it to hopefully get caught up in the story.

Hi. Master and Commander! Came to the books through the film which was excellent. Up until then had tried a few Hornblower type books but hadn't been taken by them. The film made me want to read the books so I started with number 1 and carried on in sequence. The odd thing was, finding out the film wasn't based on any one book but bits and pieces of a few. On reading the series in the first place and having seen the film a few times, it really was good fun to spot where incidents and characters came in. As far as characters go, I love Killick and Bonden and follow them through with great enjoymenmt. On another matter, I was born in Portsmouth and know a lot of the area well. Some of the places are still there. At the back of Portsdown Hill, which overlooks the harbour, is an old house set in fileds and surrounded by trees which may have been the basis for Ashgrove Cottage, don't know that as a fact but its very similar and in exactly the right place. Anyway, glad to hear how others got into the books.
