Really liked this book - very reminiscent of Bridge of Birds.

While the story was diverting, I didn't care for this nearly so much as I expected I would, having read The Adventures of Edward Tulane. It didn't have the same charm and love.

Oh, I wanted to like this book so much, but it just didn't work for me. It almost felt like three different story ideas got sort of smooshed together into this one book - the Princess Academy bit, the quarry-stone talking bit, and the economic triumph-over-"evil" bit. And the only thing that really drew them together was that they were all happening in the same place - the stories just weren't intertwined enough to make it all feel like one bigger story. Instead it just felt disjointed and a little odd.

In addition, a lot of the little pieces of the stories were simplistic and a bit trite. Perhaps it's partly that I'm older than the intended age range for the book, but there were a lot of tidbits that felt cliche: Mom dies in the quarry so Dad won't let Daughter in the quarry but NEVER TELLS HER WHY leading her to feel like an outcast -- Main character girl gets off to a bad start at the Academy but then becomes the most popular girl there after befriending the other outcast -- Main character girl is in the unique position to figure out the method behind the quarry magic particularly due to her outcast status -- Girls arrive at Academy to discover that the teacher is HORRIBLE and TERRIBLE and shuts them in closets with rats...

I'm sorry, Terry, but this one stunk. The only redeeming qualities were Gaspode the Talking Dog and the brief appearance of Death, whom I fangirl wildly.

As good as the Velveteen Rabbit. Should be on every kid's bookshelf.

The cover says this is supposedly one of Cook's best books.

    No, no it is not.

What the crap, how have I never read Terry Pratchett before? I am now a fan.

It pains me to say it, as I love this series, but this book was not good. While billed as a "prequel" it really has nothing to do with the other Ember books until nearly the final page, where the connection is made. Unfortunately, though, the connection reads like it was conceived just to make the book connect to the stories of Ember, and seems totally contrived.

As a stand alone book, I still wouldn't have enjoyed it much. The story isn't very exciting, it has none of the suspense of the other Ember books.

Honestly, it feels like Jeanne DuPrau had an unpublished manuscript lying around and decided to try to bank on the success of the Ember stories by changing a few details and publishing it as part of the series. Here's hoping that at some point she writes a *real* prequel for the books -- it does seem like there's a fascinating story there waiting to be told.

This book made me angry at it. But was also incredible. Incredibly angering.

I really don't know how I feel, I'm very conflicted.
