Thanks for the review of Jennifer Shahade's book. I think I'll pick it up to read for myself and to have on the shelf for my daughter and my son when and if they become interested in chess.
Welcome! I am looking forward to wonderous words on your site. No pressure, that!zenmama
I read 'Bird by Bird' on Mark's recommendation - a must for anyone who writes or wishes to take up writing. This summer I went to the bookshop to buy some books for my nearly teenage son, rather disappointed that none of the 'classics' take up shelf space - that's not to disparage the Harry Potter lovers (although this series doesn't hit the spot for me), just to say that people have been writing novels before the advent of mass marketing... I pulled out two books from my 12-14yrs reading 'A High Wind in Jamaica' by Richard Hughes is about some kids who get captured by pirates. It was written in 1929 and still holds up today, sophisticated and chilling (I read the book at school because I loved the movie with Anthony Quinn so much). The second book my son enjoyed is a 1951 book :'The Day of the Triffids' written by John Whyndham. It's a sci-fi novel about plants (triffids) which take over the world. The book creates a very credible world in which tyranny survives but shows how some people are able to work together to escape this. You will never look at a houseplant again in the same way...
you've inspired me to pick up GEB again and just get through it already...
