hey Cagil! i am fine, thanks. :)

i am still in the US, and my second semester here is nearing completion. i am not taking any courses in summer, and will be reading some stuff on my own. i can think of a dozen more interesting things to do (travelling would probably be at the top of my list), but unfortunately, i don't have the money to do any of those things :(. well, maybe later.

i watched so many good films recently! have you watched 'i've loved you so long'? i found it amazing! did you have to write a dissertation/thesis for your MA?

i am sure you will get a scholarship to start working on a PhD. what school are you going to there btw?

    take care dear pal,

How'd you like David Copperfield? I bought it out of curiosity and because it was referenced in Catcher in the Rye.

    Hello Cagil!

Yes, I am still in USA. well, you are quite the globetrotter, aren't you? ;-)) I do not have plans to visit London soon, but thank you so much. I love having friends from all over the world! You know you can stop by too if you are in this part of the world.

I am desperately trying to complete my assignments and papers for the semester, and all of them are due next week, so other than a haywire sleeping pattern and frequent panic attacks, I am fine! ;-))

MA in film studies? thats very interesting, indeed. you have diverse interests, and i think films are a good way to accommodate these varied interests. it should be an extremely good choice for you. i have taken to watching more films after i came here.

it snows here frequently now (it is snowing as i write this), so i don't get out much either. but i have plans to go visit my brother in pennsylvania once this crazy semester is over.

    best,

    taoism, sufism, and quantum physics?
mamma mia, as the viennese might say!;-)

well, i have picked up a thing or two about sufism too while working as a project fellow in the university, and i must say that it is very very interesting!

and you have read a lot! now let me boggle your mind a little(might be a little presumptuous on my part though, i am awed enough by the quantum physics bit!) by mentioning that there is more than one ramayana!(the one in south india mentions ravana as the good guy!)and then there are the ones like the indonesian one(havnt read it, would love to soemday)...

and something for istanbul?? thats very generous of you, just bring anything you want, as long as you drop by if you are here...

you can mail me too if thats convenient, i chk my shelfari profile only occasionally....

    hello back zeytin pal...
sorry for the delay in replying.

well, and now for ur questions....
the first thing u need to know about about indian culture and religion is that there isnt one! isnt ONE, i mean...what we have are indian cultures within the blanket term of “Indian culture”...and as for religions, i dont think they can be exclusively categorised as indian...and it can be a little confusing...ill give u an example...india has the 3rd largest muslim population in the world and yet is known to the world as primarily a hindu nation (that isnt true, btw...india is constitutionally secular, like, if i am not mistaken, turkey, and now, nepal...)...and i know of incredible india advertisements (a series of advertisements by the govt. of india to attract tourism) that rightly points india out as a country having many sacred sites for budhhists...
and then we have sikhs, christians, jains, parsis and of course, indigenous peoples who have their own religion, if they have not already converted to hinduism or christianity, or been made to convert...dont want to get into that debate!

but what we do have is a rich spiritual consciousness...as a random selection, i can advise you to read the works of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother of Pondicherry, and Ramakrishna- Vivekananda literature....and there are the ancient texts of hinduism like the vedas and the gita, and the several versions of ramayana and mahabharata, of course...but plz don’t conclude that Indian spirituality is to be equated with hindu spirituality..

i know i said that there isnt any one indian culture...we are a bunch of very different people who, by some sweet miracle, have found the way to exist together...and are working still as a team... a very helpful introduction to the indian culture(s) can be, amartya sen's The Argumentative Indian...

but there is nothing better than experiencing india firsthand..as you are about to do...
summer is not exactly a very good time to visit india..(sweltering heat!!)..but since i guess uve already made plans...:)

i stay in the eastern part of india..kolkata, to be exact..and if u decide to drop by we can meet up and i can even show you around a bit(the headquarters of the ramakrishna order is in kolkata)...but sorry pal, doesnt seem ill be able to join u for the road trip..altho' id love to!

and you are in vienna? cool!(literally, we are burning up here!)

    my very best wishes,
    oiseau.

Hi! I noticed that we've read a few books in common. I read your review of "The Catcher in the Rye." Thanks for posting some quotes from the book. I truly enjoyed reading it back when I was still in high school. And I plan to read it again, but not soon. If you liked it, you might also like reading "'Tis" by Frank McCourt [author of "Angela's Ashes"] and "A Monk Swimming" by his brother, Malachy.

    Sevgili Karadut,
Ermeni konusunda ailemizden gelen bilgiler var. Anneannenin dedesi Egin(Kemanilede) Ermenileri korumus. Anneanemden duymustum onun icin Ermeni aileleri hep adaya cagirir hurmet eder raki ikram ederlermis anneanemde misafirlikte ikram edilen geri cevrilmez deyip icerdik diyordu sonrada kisir kisir guluyordu. Ben bunu The Times gazetesi arsivinde buldum sana yollarim. Olay 1896 da oluyor. Simdi tabii bu Ermenilerin katliamlara ugradigini gosteriyor ama yine aileden biliyoruz Ermeni teroristleri ayni PKK taktigini uyguluyorlarmis. Yani olayi fitilliyenler onlar. Yayinlayan gizli yayinliyor ikinci nesil Amerikali Turk cunku Ermeniler oldurebilirler. Bu konularin sakasi yok. Hrant'a gelince Fetullahci- CIA isbirligi ile olduruldu. Sevgiler Mustafa
