Loved this book. It hooked me from the beginning and the slow revealing of facts about the protagonist and his family and friends was paced perfectly. The main, while at first likable, slowly but surely rationalizes himself into foolish and deadly decision. A-one!

Hunter, who writes the best "men w/ guns" books around, takes Bob Lee Swagger out of his element (the modern American West)and puts him in modern day Japan where he stands out like a sore thumb. We learn lots about Japan's obsesson w/ swords, the Japanese porno industry and a bit more about Swagger Sr in a flashback. Pure men's adventure-type posturing but no one does it better or does better research than Mr. Hunter.

An exhaustive and at time exhausting trek across America right before the California Gold Rush w/ cameos from Darwin, Alan Pinkerton, and others that my feeble can't remember at the moment. Well-rendered characters and locales but I would have liked a bit more adventure (especially in Central Amer). They spent more time in NYC than they needed to. BUT, a great book none the less.

This is a very funny book that I'm sure will be turned into a movie. Humor is very hard to write, but this gets the job done.

All of the Swagger books (whether it's Earl or Earl Jr) are great men-with-guns adventures. Why they haven't been turned into a franchise movie is my question. Not for everyone.

I'm probably being unfair giving this book a 3 star rating since I haven't finished it. I do agree w/ some of the other opinions that it was hard to get into but now that I about 200+ pages in the story is clipping along at a furious pace and I'm really enjoying it.
