I'm the author of Coyotes and Town Dogs: Earth First! and the Environmental Movement (Viking 1993), the editor of the anthology Naked: Writers Uncover the Way We Live on Earth (Thunder's Mouth 2003) and various essays, articles, and columns, including an essay in the photography book In Katrina's Wake: Portraits of Loss from an Unnatural Disaster (Princeton Architectural Press 2006). (In Katrina's Wake really is a beautiful book, apart from my brilliant essay. The photographs are by Chris Jordan, who flew to New Orleans and turned destruction and loss into poetry.) My friend David Gessner (Sick of Nature) and I are the bad boy and the bad girl of environmental writing, but while David's still fighting that good fight, I've been working on fiction, teaching, and when I do write (for the LA Times and the LA Weekly, mostly) it's usually about Africa and issues of civil society. « less
