A high school English teacher gave me a story from this collection which started me on the long, lonely path of postmodernity and critical theory. Lucky I am back to reality and enjoying the post-post-modern discourse of our networked culture, but this gem has not lost any of its luster.

If conceptual art wasn't largely boring it read like Barth's short stories. He reveals the authority of the author, and the relationship with the reader, while also making an early attempt at physically interactive fiction, and plus a story that stars a bunch of sperm as the main character. How can you go wrong?

For me this is the low point in the George Saunder's canon. Usually he is a writer who makes my hair stand on end, and this largely felt formulaic and uninspired. But please read EVERYTHING else by GS. He writes American-Consumer-Culture-Ghost-Stories that make you laugh like no ones business. (Except his publishers).

I went to a transhumanism conference, and said that I liked this book. I was accused of being an "eco-fascist who hated humans and post-humans alike", or something to that affect. Um....not exactly. If nothing else there are some amazing scenes about the future of video.

This came out of nowhere and hit me over the head. It reminded me of all the GOOD post-modernism I had been missing by John Barth et al. Sort of a sci-fi Canterbury Tales.

A thoroughly researched beautifully illustrated book about the cultural ecology of Bangalore. However, I have yet to actually 'read' any chapter because the design is such that it ONLY functions as a coffee table, and not the seminal cultural ecological study it could be.

What could have been an excellent fictionalization of post-colonial Africa is dragged down by an insanely large page count and constant repetition, that does nothing to further the narrative, paint a picture, or even evoke a cyclical story arc. A sharp editor could have trimmed this into an extremely powerful novella, but instead the reader gets a bloated novel that is repetitive and tiring to trudge through.
