“Bought this book really cheap, only MYR9.90 from BookXcess (a local bookstore). Took it from the book heap in the store because it was nominated by Richard & Judy Book Club.
As a Malay, I have to admit some of the thoughts of the English characters was something that I cannot quite fathom, especially when it touches on the cultural and intellectual side of the people (which is based on Western worldview). Some of this thought gave rise to certain feelings specific to English people.
However the main theme of the story on family bonding, love and expectation, which is something universal, is touching and interesting.
There's hardly any novel on the same plateau in Malay language, and I believe it could be explored by our writers - focusing in the dilemma faced by Malaysian families in today's worlds - not the normal ups and downs of love life as portrayed by too familiar love stories, but the intricacies of human bonds between family members weaved so critically and delicately.”
