Donna B

Hi! I'm a reference librarian and teen liaison at the Niles Public Library. What does that mean? Well, I sit at a public service desk and answer people's questions, select non-fiction books for ages 12-18, and work on programs for teens. I also work with area schools to provide library services to teachers and students.

Jane survives a shark attack but loses her right arm - her good arm that she loved to draw with. Adjusting to life without it is hard, even with a supportive family and friends. Try going through one day without using your good arm - anything harder? about the same? impossible?

Mutants, cyborgs, high-tech fighter planes, virtual reality video games and spaceships populate this fast-paced scifi adventure thriller set in a grim future where the poor live in fold-down apartments, the rich live high above in golden turrets, and the very poorest of the poor live in the dank dark shadows.

Bobby is a teenage thief who would rather jack cars in Dublin with his friends than "start over" in the countryside with his ma and younger brother, Dennis. Bobby is soon torn between competing desires to learn how to fix cars with a couple of locals, and simply steal a car to return to his old life. Meanwhile, the ramshackle house they rent seems to be haunted.

  • Freedom Walkers: The Story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott
    • Rated 4 stars

Ordinary people (not just extraordinary leaders) in 1950s Montgomery, Alabama united to end segregated buses. African Americans were required to sit in the backs of buses and give up their seats to white riders. After brave women including Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks were arrested for refusing to give up their seats, a citywide boycott was organized. A car pool was formed to get people to and from work and school. Others walked for miles each day. The boycott lasted for over a year, despite police harrassment and death threats. Full of historical photographs and moving words.

  • The Gettysburg ; the graphic novel
    • Rated 3 stars

Brief, visual introduction to the Battle of Gettysburg and the creation of the memorial built on the battle site. Just enough information about Gettysburg to whet your appetite. It also includes Lincoln's Gettysburg address, accompanied by some nice images that carrie Lincoln's vision into modern America.

  • Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith
    • Rated 4 stars

    Opposites attract ...
Charles Darwin is a budding naturalist, loves order, struggles with religious doubt, and is fresh from a 5-year voyage around the world. Emma Wedgwood is brilliant, devoutly Christian, a sloppy homebody, and loves music. When they decide to marry, both are terrified. They don't know each other that well, and their beliefs seem very different. Both are open-minded, though, and willing to compromise. This is a very readable biography of two very interesting and likable people. You may begin to care about them as you read, suffering along with their losses and celebrating their successes.

Brain-eating zombies and butt-kicking heroines are integrated seamlessly into this very funny adaptation of a classic romantic tale. For 55 years, Britain has been overrun by undead hordes. Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters have trained with a Shaolin master in the arts of zombie-killing and now use their skills to protect England. Elizabeth's superior abilities attract the attention of the proud Mr. Darcy, who is also an accomplished zombie killer. But will Elizbabeth's embarrassing mother, Darcy's stuck-up aunt, numerous jealous admirers, and hundreds of flesh-eating monsters keep them apart?
