A very quick but charming read. Fans of Francesca Lia Block's magical style will love it (especially if they loved 'Girl Goddess 9', her earlier collection of short stories.)

Almost entirely unrepresentative of Tom Robbins' talent as a writer. (Also, as a person who spent a lot of her childhood around drunk adults, the premise of the book struck me as rather.. ill-advised. To say the least. The author walks a thin line throughout and for a not particularly noble cause, in my opinion.)

Surprizingly excellent debut novel by Craig Ferguson. (Yes, "the Scottish Conan guy" of late night TV fame.)

Reminded me a lot of Tom Robbins' novels (that's a good thing.. if you love Tom Robbins.)

Good enough to make me wonder what on earth Craig Ferguson is doing hosting late night television. (Actually I don't wonder at all. Hosting a talk show (even one on CBS) surely pays better than writing novels. Certainly good ones.)

Hope he finds time to write another novel at some point.

Better than 'Twilight'. (See 'Twilight' review.)

Not as good as 'Bloodsucking Fiends'. (See 'Bloodsucking Fiends' review.)

(Also, I wonder, how can a book sell so many copies when the author forgot to give the main character a personality?)

Two words: the shirts. Killed me. What a perfect, heartbreaking ending. Wonderful little novella.

Forget 'The Catcher In the Rye'. THIS is IT. Intense. Brilliant.

I'm in the "loved it" camp. I do not apologise for this. It made me laugh. A lot. Favourite parts: the picture of the stapler, the upsidedown addendum, the part with the imagined scenario of babysitter homocide. Could write more but have to go try to explain "irony" to my little brother.

I'd say this book is more fun/interesting to discuss with others than to read. It's pretty short and easy, which (given the oft-time controversial and complex topics it covers) does it a disservice. The ad-on's at the end (excerpts from the Freakonomics blog, magazine articles, etc) seem more like filler rather than an extension of the original (brief) text.

Very much an "introduction to" level book. For those who might be thinking of studying economics or sociology, this is probably a good place to start. It won't take you long to get through it and it might make you want to find out more.

I love this book. Great for recommendations if/when you're bored of the tamer stuff on your shelves. Just enough info on each author to pique a readers curiosity. The perfect starting point for many a new reading obsession.
