Unlike some unmentionable members of my family, I firmly believe that Science Fiction and Fantasy are equal in standing to all other genres of literature. They allow for a truly immersive reading experience no other genre can emulate!

I especially enjoy a good coming of age story. "Ender's Game," David Edding's "Pawn of Prophecy," the... more »

Wyko, there is certainly a thread from one to the other so I guess lightly related stories is a correct analysis of the collection...

Keep going it gets better. However, because of the archaic lingual aspects it may not be your cup of tea. Sorry, it's been a favorite of mine for most of my life...

Wyko, fantastic, I hope you get bitten by the Jack Vance bug that bit me 57 years ago. Yes, I loved the Hunger Games also and was sorry to see the series end. The easiest way to search my shelf is to list the books by author (alphabetical) and then go to that authors section of the shelf. Also, because you loved Hunger Games I think you will also really like "The Maze Runner Trilogy" by James Dashner. Looking forward to your comments about "Tales of the Dying Earth Collection." Enjoy and READ ON...

Wyko, "Tales of the Dying Earth" by Jack Vance is perhaps the quintessential collection of sci/fi fantasy/adventure stories ever written by one of the most revered and awarded authors to write in this genre. The words that come to mind when trying to describe his incredible achievement are: wondrous, magnificent, epic, spellbinding, dazzling, exquisite, inventive, wordsmithery, magical, elegant, enthralling, engrossing, imaginative, original, mellifluous pacing, atmospheric backdrops, transformational, fantastical storylines! I read the first story in this collection when i was 11 years old and the others in the ensuing years. Over the years I have read the collection over 20 times, each time reflecting on the joy it brings me and its life changing impact on my reading addiction. Just imagine being able to transform written words from your minds eye into life-like visions and you will then understand the sensual impact of Jack Vance's brilliance! Ironically, because of its unique qualities I have always been protective and therefore reluctant to expose this truly fabulous literary experience to others for fear of diminishing its value to me...a misguided supposition I know, but true never-the-less. So, if you want to share my journey into the unknown and wander through the beautiful worlds as penned by a master scribe then you will want to read this incredible collection of stories and revel in their beatific perfection. Storytelling at its best; a masterpiece...

Wyko, here are a few of the funniest most entertaining coming-of-age stories I've ever read. "Carter Finally Gets It" by Brent Crawford, "Youth in Revolt" and "Revolting Youth" by C.D. Payne, and "Spanking Shakespeare" by Jake Wizner. READ ON...

I'm reading Rage of a Demon King in the Serpentwar Saga by Feist - how did you like it? I'm slowly acquiring all of the books in the Riftwar Cycle, and reading them a series at a time. Have you read more in the verse? Which series was your favorite?

I'm always looking to geek out about books with folks, and also looking for suggested series/authors.

I looked at Mistborn reviews, and the magic system seems to be with swallowing metals...not the kind I like. :P

Do you know of books (besides Eddings) were the magic doesn't rely on spells or metals, but from the power in your mind (or your will)? Or like the Inheritance Cycle were the magic comes from "willing" and words in the ancient language?

I just don't like spells, where what you can do is limited by the spells you know (and who found the spells in the first place?), or magic from objects, which could get lost or used up.

Thanks for the recommendations! I added them to my list to read. :)

It is getting longer... :-/ (lol)

I noticed with Ender's Game that it is "book 2" in its series (but the strange thing is there is a "book 0" in the series too...so Ender's Game may be 3rd).

Wyko hi, I've come across a story that is so exeptional I had to write you about it. It's titled "Nathan's Run" by John Gilstrap and I think you will find it as moving and inspiring as I did. While a fictional account it is an emotional coming-of-age journey that will pull at your heartstrings and give you pause to think about the power of the human spirit. Enjoy and READ ON...

Let's be very clear: I certainly love to fantasize. I am NOT interested in someone else's fantasies. To bad for Tolstoy, not the shabbiest of authors. However, I wil NEVER read The hobbit.
