I'm a cubicle-monkey, but my heart lays with the those special transports called books. If you have recommendations, I'd love to hear them (but, please, I keep my shelves up to date; it's annoying to get a rec for a book I've clearly read/rated/reviewed). And if you find yourself emailing me several times with no response, please know that it's... more »

Despite the topic, the book came off as might slooooow. Some of the devices, such as jumping time periods without transition, can be distracting. The passages of Callie running are most evocative and reveal the most about Callie as a character.

I genuine mind-f*** of a book. I'm not usually into mysteries or psychological suspense, but this one had me up until 2am; I just couldn't put it down, which is the same reaction I hd 15 years ago when I read it the first time in eight grade.

Even without explicitly spelling out the crimes or actions (“tenderness” is code for almost every despicable act), or perhaps because of it, the suspense is heightened and constant.

Difficult start, since Charlie's voice seems too young for his age. He gradually matures, making it easier to fall into the story.

Oh. God. How to describe this book. More jacked up than I Am the Cheese, but somehow more identifiable, even though it's set in a sci-fi world. Jonas's struggles to understand and relate his false memories make for enormously gripping reading.

Stunning read. Melinda's downward spiral and self-destruction while trapped in her private hell is easily identifiable.

The topic is unique, especially in chick-lit, and the worst language is a couple of "shit"s throughout the book. I'm still debating if the book is cliché or not, but it's genuine and has a great message.

  • From The Notebooks Of Melanin Sun
    • Rated 5 stars

Such a short book, full of amazing imagery and emotion. Mel has a strong, fluid voice, drawing parallels between the animal world and his real life. He's honest and giving, portraying the give and take that comes in any loving relationship.

  • Dicey's Song
    • Rated 3 stars

The most scandalous part is Jeff's 16-year old character (in the 10th grade) pursuing 13-year old Dicey. The boat allusions get a little tiresome and heavy-handed by the end, but it works for the story. Would be better to start with Homecoming, the first book in the series.

  • Go Ask Alice
    • Rated 2 stars

Despite being branded as a "real diary" and exposed as a fake, Alice's story of desperation and depravity resonate with the reader. Her pain is similar to that felt by any teenage girl, although her experiences with drugs are a little far-fetched to the point of fantasy.
