Who thought reading about the UPS logistics system, Truck drivers, ship captains, and coal trails could be so engaging?

This is the most influential book I've ever read. Observation vs. imagination. I can't see how one could ever occur without the other.

Read it in highschool. I white kid in a white highschool. So naturally I had no idea what it was about. Actually I thought I was reading the H.G. Wells version.

His short stories are great. The title track is striking. I heard him read @ the Tulane Exchange in Albuquerque in 1998 so I can read them in his voice. And he has a good voice. -M

There are a couple of short story writers who could be considered "the best American short story writer." Carver is one of them. Also high on the list of writers I didn't like in highschool but love now.

Not the best collection of short work on vice, but they're all good and fun and it definitely looks good on your bookshelf.

Very literati. Not sure what that means, but it sounds very intellegenti. Spellchecker is telling me that's not a word. I make the rules here! (spellchecker is also telling me spellchecker is not a word.) This is a good book. I highly recommend you read it if you want to be cool. -M

Great writing. The characters aren't so much shallow as subtly developed. Fitzgerald is very cynical in his descriptions and underhanded with his revelations. If you hated this in highschool, give it another try.

Decent writing, but no story and no real empathic reason to read this. If you have nothing but time, maybe.
