Willasmiley

I have almost no books with me in Utah. Add that to the fact that I only buy books when they are both heavily discounted AND not available at the library, and my shelf will make me look almost illiterate.

I think "A man in full" and "The Bonfire of the Vanities" are both enjoyable reads. Gratned thsoe are the only other books I've read, but they are both like pushing 800 pages, so I think that's pretty awesome.

The only thing that gets me is that I sort of start to feel sorry for/embarrassed for the main characters are their lives get destroyed.
I know they deserve it, but I seriously feel bad.

Both of these books have some crazy awesome story lines. I love how Wolfe pulls everything together.

And there's a word limit they don't tell you about!!!!
We need the market in here now.

here's what I said (I think in the rest of my note)
Fifth - Wolfe's greatest contribution may exposing reality in stark stark terms through a great story

Sixth - Essentially Wolfe's a genius. here's to hoping this book helps shape the discussion about America's colleges.

First - can I say that it is super annoying that there is no reply button by notes. I had to click on your profile and then click leave a note - goodness - why has not the market solved this yet?

Second - I think Tom Wolfe is one of the best writers I have ever read, along with Whittaker Chambers and Ann Coulter. Not even so much for "I am CS," but for "The Bonfire of the Vanities" and A Man in Full." He tells and weaves an amazing story. Just as a writer he's great - oh and add F. Scott Fitzgerald to that list.

Third - It's scary to think about college like that and yet I'm guessing he accurately depicts alot of people's college experience. Yeah for being sheltered!! He is a master at depciting emotions too. Incredible word pictures

Fourth - he's so cynical, although perhaps with reason. The ending is so depressing. She's happy, because she's Charlotte Simmons, but that phrase means so much less at the end of the book then the beginning

    Fifth - Wolfe's greatest contributi

The Big V was apointed by Carter in 1979 (arguably the one success of his presidency). Reagan then appointed Greenspan because Volcker steped down after the economy got back on a steady footing. In fact, I've heard that Carter blames Volcker for his loss to Reagan because Volcker shaking out the stagflation sent the economy into a temporary and necessary tail spin. I think there's a lot of truth to that, but if you have to sacrifice a president to get inflation under control, who better than Jimmy? :)

Did you read "Our Endangered Values"? What did you think? Does he mention Volcker?
