I have one serious addiction in life: Books. I read a lot, and buy way more than I could ever read. I want to one day have my very own library, hence the ever growing collection. I do not have a favorite genre, I give everything a fair chance. My all time favorite book is 1984 by George Orwell. I'm 25 years old, a Library Technician student and... more »

I am loving it, of course! I love the heroine, so clever and Sherlock-like, but still so innocent and cute :)
I see that you are reading A Casual Vacancy, I just finished it a few months ago.. How are you liking it?

    Goodo! Thanks. :)

You have some great books too. I want to read The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, but I'm really trying hard (this year!) not to acquire any more books until I've reduced my 'to read' pile.

    Welcome to Good Reads, Shannon.

We are glad you joined and want to encourage you to participate. In November we read and discussed Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson. For December and January we are reading Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.

The group profile should give you an idea of how Good Reads works and the shelf provides a list of some of the other books we have read. Please feel free to post to any of the older book discussions as well as the new.

And, don't forget to vote for the February read.

    Hi, Shannon.

I'd read this book some 4 or 5 years ago, in high school. It's one of those books I like to come back to every so often to see how my reading changes over time. I remember being really caught up in the obvious duality themes, and I do notice a lot more of those this time around. At the moment, I'm focusing on how the narrative turns largely internal as Fred/Arctor's mental state deteriorates, something I didn't notice at first. It could possibly mirror the building depression before the moment he decided to dump his suburban life for undercover drug work. All in all, I’m enjoying it more the second time.

Hi, Shannon! I'm so sorry, did I miss welcoming you to the Canada group!?

Hi, Shannon! I'm from the Canada group and just wanted to stop by to welcome you to the group. It's not a terribly active group, but it tends to comes in spurts. There is a Welcome and Introductions thread if you'd like to introduce yourself there. We also have a review thread if you read anything by a Canadian author. Of course, feel free to contribute to the other threads as well! Enjoy! :-)

No problem. I'm only about 35 pages in and so far it's good. The writing is beautiful but I don't yet know if the story itself will captivate me in the way early reviews seem to indicate it should.

My favorite quote from the History of Love is, "There are times when the kindness of strangers only makes matters worse because one realizes how badly one is need of kindness and that the only source is a stranger." Do you like the book thus far?
