I am in my waning years as a clinical social worker and am an aspiring writer. For many years, I was unable to read as much as I'd like due to work and family needs and because I have difficulty understanding what I read. Then, I learned I qualified for Talking Books, and have added to my bookshelf tenfold. I invite others with similar reading...more »

Hi, Weradi--I don't know if Ivan Doig's latest "The Eleventh Man" is out on CD--hope so. I found it really good--a Doig-style telling of a World War II, from the point of view of former members of a Montana football team and their different theaters of the War. I've put in a reserve at the library for Tall Grass but don't know when I'll get it--thanks for the suggestion. Finding the need to read a little bit lighter fare now--post-election relief, I guess. I was so het up over this election, in a way that I can't remember ever being. Probably has something to do with living in the burbs of such a political town. Obama sure is coming into a mess. I can't imagine anyone wanting to take on this job but grateful that he is! Starting Updike's newest tonight, listening to Franzen's The Corrections while I knit. The Le Carre and Lehane new books are on tap when they come in at the library. Maybe I'll tackle some more challenging stuff after the holidays. Things are good here, not so much with my friend. She's in the midst of radiation right now and doesn't want to talk--can't say I would want to, either. Take care, Weradi--hang in there! Leslie

Hi, Weradi--I don't know if this is your book not but I'll throw it out there. It's Steve Martin's "Born Standing Up." I listened to it (he's the reader also) and really enjoyed it. Somehow, I thought that the crazy bent that is his humor just came naturally to him. I found it really interesting to see how he honed his comic timing over years of watching and learning from others. It's short--only 4 CD's long--maybe one for one of your commute treks.
Hope all is going well--we're gripped with "election fever" here, as Craig Ferguson says.
    Take care, lady,

Hi, Weradi--Thanks much for your note. I'm glad you got the job but sorry you're not wild about it. It doesn't sound to me as though you're picky at all! I saw the movie about Nash and thought it was quite good. Anyway, for your long commute, I've got a couple to suggest--"Blindness," "The Fortress of Solitude," "Motherless Brooklyn" and "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle." I just started the last of these but am liking it so far. It's now an Oprah book so might be harder to get hold of. The one I think you'd really, really like but not sure it's out on CD is "Cost" by Roxana Robinson. Just an amazing look at a family in crisis over their drug-addicted son. Thanks for asking about my friend--she came up in mid-September and we had a great, great visit, though much too short. She's coping really well but has a long way to go. The most important thing for me is that she's who she is, who I've known as a fantastic friend for 35 years--the surgery did nothing to her spirit!

    Take care, Weradi--
    Leslie
P.S. Did you see that Ivan Doig has a new book coming out in a couple of months, I think? That's definitely something to look forward to!

Hi, Weradi--I've been thinking about you and wondering how things are going for you. If you'd like to reply privately, feel free to send me an email. I loved "A Soldier of the Great War," though I'd probably have a hard time saying much about it. Anyway, just wanted to say hi. Hope things are better.

    Take care,Weradi,

Hi, Weradi--50 miles sounds like a really long commute; if you get the job, I hope you have a CD player in your car and can listen to some books. Weradi, I hope things turn around for you soon. My friend is doing well, working to get to the point where she can actually work at home (where she was working before--she has the kind of job I have) for 2 hours a day to start. She types emails as part of her OT. Her husband gets his pacemaker/defibrillator tomorrow, and her brother is there with them to help out, bless him. She's hoping to be well enough to travel up here in September, even to work. I hope she can. Best thing is that her spirits are really good--she's her old self and she's fighting to come back as much as she can. That's just the best! I'm good, knitting blankies, singing and struggling with a switchover to a digital transcription system. I'm really dense about these things and have agonized far more than called for, for something so simple. I didn't have 16 hours of brain surgery, for heaven's sake. You might like the book I'm listening to on CD right now--"The Keep" by Jennifer Egan. It's a story within a story and well done, I think. I haven't finished it but really like it. H. just came in the door--better go make dinner. Take care, lady--Leslie

Hi--I'm sorry your contract was terminated. Kind of a scary time to have no income! Hope everything is okay for you. I'm dreaming of being able to retire, but that's me--still 4 years off at least. We're fine and my friend is coming along. Her surgery was 16 hours long--I can't even imagine. She has weakness on her left side and is left-handed, but some of that came back today, thank goodness. I talked with her for a brief time today. She sounds good but tired. Thanks for thinking of her. Take care, lady--Leslie

Hi--Thanks, Weradi, I appreciate your honest view of this book. Years ago, I saw Lucy Grealy on Charlie Rose and she didn't come across like that. Maybe it is the way Patchett portrays her. I just know she committed suicide, right? The reason I was asking was that I have a really good friend who has a brain tumor (benign, thank God, but the complications can be pretty bad) and her surgery is coming up very soon. I thought it might be something to read for, I don't know what, but something. Not exactly inspiration, but something positive. This feeling helpless to do much for someone you care about so much is really hard. I have Autobiography of a Face but haven't read it. Have you? Thanks again--Leslie
P.S. I loved Bel Canto, not crazy about Run.

I had been a fan of Patricia Nell Warren's work for years. Her classic Front Runner was one of the first gay theme books I had ever read. I'm very much interested in history and anthropology, and One is the Sun plays to that interest quite well:-)

I enjoyed the book because it spoke to an older matrilineal heritage within certain Native American tribes, and of healing women, a cultural heritage that has been ignored in many stories.
