Vijay since I joined Shelfari I never have time to read, smile. Its ironic but true. Many of my books are my husbands which he buys then I read, after he has finished them. Often we get a chance to discuss points together, usualy on Saturday we go to Barnes and Noble find nice comfy chairs and he will read all the events about politics and economics. I just find a good book and often take my own as I said I never seem to have time to read. Enjoy the weekend with your family and may you all enjoy good health, at sixty five I now realize this is the most important thing in life.

Dear Vijay,Log on to www.thefourthmonkey.co.inI have posted reviews and articles that have appeared on my novel.Have you passed the book to any of your colleagues in the dept of English? How about making Bose read it? I had only a brief interaction with him at Sherubtse, but I carry pleasant memories of him. With fond regards,Sushil Gupta
Dear Vijay,Can I persuade you to write an article on my book? I can suggest quite a few topics: 1. Mysticism versus Atheism/Existentialism as projected through the marriage of Madan and Shelly. 2. Inter-textuality: allusions to other literary texts, myths, films and paintings (starting from Botticelli's painting on cover). 3. The use of metaphors in the text: cricket, angel, the fourth monkey, marriage as a book etc. 4. Women characters in the novel. 5. Erotica in the novel. 6. Portrayal of Bhutanese ethos in the narrative. If something else strikes you as conspicuous you are welcome to write on it. I shall get the article published in one of the literary journals. As I suggested earlier, pass my novel on to your colleagues in the dept of English. Looking forward to your response.Sushil Gupta
Dear Vijay,Went through your gut reactions to my novel. As I said in my Foreword everything in my novel is true except the story. The main characters of Shelly, Sherry/Tshering and Tashi are fictitious. The minor characters are liberally drawn from life. There are only a handful of people who were there in our time who would relate to the setting and some events. It goes without saying that it is a NOVEL and not a memoir. With my imagination I played around with colleagues, friends and students on the campus and wove a web of narrative which would be of interest to readers not familiar with the cultural landscape. If you didn't find many anecdotes which I used to narrate there it is because they did not fit in the story. I bet you must have been looking forward to seeing yourself on the pages. Pity, you could not be accommodated in the flow of narrative. You are right about Paulo Coelho's Eleven Minutes. In fact the entire novel is full of echoes from literature, myths, paintings and newsworthy events. I wish somebody would undertake to write an exclusive article on this topic. Can you ask one of your colleagues in the dept of English to do so?A few readers have already highlighted some aspects of the novel. Urvashi Sabu has written on the student-teacher relationship in the novel. Jasdeep Kaur has highlighted the role of Imagination in the work. Vandana Agrawal has chosen to write on the author making use of the tradition. Sudhir Bose, who spent four years in Sherubtse (1986-90), has written an article 'Across Countries and Cultures'. Madhu Mehra has written on 'The Enigma of Shelly'. Taneja, the editor of IN-BETWEEN, a half-yearly literary journal, asked me to write on what prompted me to write this novel at the age of sixty-plus. I have handed over my article titled 'Milton and Me'. If you are interested I shall post some of them to you.Your comments are of interest to me, but I shall appreciate if you could take some time off to pen down a critique of the work or choose some specific aspect. Many leads are suggested in the Foreword. A very interesting topic can be the conflict between Shelly's Mysticism (Mira-Krishna motif) and Madan Swaroop's Atheism tinged with Existentialism.I am somewhat surprised to read that you didn't find my work erotic. Personally I feel the book oozes with sex and erotica. Again quoting from my Foreword, 'At one level the novel can be read as the sexual odyssey of the protagonist. Diverse facets of his intimate life come to the fore: youthful fantasies, search for cojugal highs and dysfunctional dilemmas.' I consider it a signal contribution that I have been able to highlight the dysfunctional phase of an adult male's life. And that too in a comic vein.I am glad you gave me the opportunity to write all this. I await your response. Pass around my novel to others. I shall be happy to have a dialogue with others too. With warm regards,Sushil Gupta
Dear Vijay,I look forward to your reading my novel. As the byline says it is comic, erotic and 'sophic. Also read the Foreword carefully. You can also go to the site indialog.co.in for some reviews that have appeared in press.Sushil Gupta
Dear Vijay,I am impressed by the long list of books that you have read in recent past. Vainly did I look for The Fourth Monkey, my novel based on the campus of Sherubtse in Bhutan, which I had given to you when we met last. I am keen to get your feedback whenever you decide to read lesser known authors and their books. The book will be of some interest to you as you spent almost a decade in Sherubtse.Sushil Gupta
