/me is a geek.

I am a professional software engineer, and I spend most of my free time playing saxophone or reading books on my Kindle. My favourite books include The Lord of the Rings, and the Temeraire series.

I enjoy fantasy books, and love a good epic story that takes months to read.

Like Hunter I never could get into the second book of Dune. I read Dune itself at least annually for a decade or so, it keeps getting better.

If you like the idea of an amalgam of technology, a feudal society and politics, you are going to love Dune. But I have to warn you its not something everyone would like. But if you like it, you wouldn't stop until you went all the way. :)

Dune is a seminal classic in the sci-fi world. Like Ender's Game I found the first title to be enough of the series for me. If you love Dune then you have a long and storied franchise to delve deep into. Read the book if only to see where many of today's popular science fiction tropes were first conceived.
