    Asalam Alaikum
    I know it has been a long time since I have been on shelfari but life was just so busy lately (I am sure that is how it is with every one)
    I have been thinking that for some time “urdu books” have become rather inactive I think that we ought to do something to liven it up. I could not think of anything back than but I have an idea now
    I was once a member of another website that had a books lover’s page.
    Members would recommend a book and the whole group would go procure a copy. After a certain time which maybe a month or more (depending upon the size of the book) they would all come back and discuss the book as to how they found it , whether they liked it or not , what was lacking etc.
    So if you think you it is a good idea we could do something similar too
    I will initiate a discussion titled “what books should we read?”
    Members are to leave their suggestions till 1st of December 2009
    If there is more than one book we will vote for the one we want to read first.
    But remember, it is an urdu books group so the suggested titles have to be urdu.

    What do think?
    Should we do it?

    Hey Umair - i plan to read this book - sooon sometime :) I searched for a few urdu books on shelfari and got some from the list but not all. So - no, they are not added from someone's shelf and neither is there anyway of adding books outside the shelfari search engine :)

    I am reading Luminaries of the Land- Sindh Madressah's Roll of Honour by Mohammed Ali Shaikh. This book echoes Jaswant Singh's opinion about Jinnah and Pakistan. History is interesting, but to see the true picture, one must read many books. Otherwise, one is affected by the author's personal bias and opinions.
    K. K Aziz's book Murder of History is excellent. Have you read it?

    What do I think? Well I think violence is the wrong way to do things, whatever the matter.
    Catcher in the Rye was an interesting book which in 1960s was very effective on western youth and I liked it too.
    And those books I haven't read! What news from Pakistan? By the way in which part do you live? Have you been touched by the Taliban?

    well, umair, i'll say this much... on the road has to be read with an extremely free frame of mind... its a relatively complicated read in terms of the ideas it challenges, because remember, it was written during a time when conservative america was breaking free, and is set right at the beginning of the counter culture revolution. it has to be read as a travelogue, and i wouldnt advise tryign to read it all in one go. pick it up, read a few pages, distance yourself from it, and then pick it up again when you need that dose of idealism... everyone kerouac has mentioned in that book was actually a friend of hi, and it took years to write
