  • The Surrendered Wife : A Practical Guide to Finding Intimacy, Passion, and Peace with Your Man
    • Rated 3 stars

I actually don't like her title, I find it misleading. However, the concept of not trying to control another person, specifically the spouse, is one I've come across in lots of other books, mist recently in "Forgive for Love" by Fred Luskin, who refers to unenforceable rules.

The concept of not micromanaging ALL aspects of home life, to not constantly criticize, to not treat the spouse as one of the kids by giving him all kinds of rules and expect him to follow them, is a valid concept in my mind.

I agree with the message overall and her angle of presentation allowed me to become aware of some things that did not really register before.

It was a fun and fairly quick read, interesting concept of paradise. The Jamaican patois was unfamiliar to me, but I got into it. Very much a male perspective, but then it is written by a man and does not claim to be anything different.

  • God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything

The author is too much of a fundamentalist atheist for my liking. I found myself agreeing to some of his arguments, but others were aimed at a certain type of Christian religion, yet he made his argument as if his complaint was true for all religions. To me there are many different religions, and some I can agree with more than others, I have huge personal problems with the interpretations of some, but don't feel the need to put down all of them because of that.

I actually did not finish reading this book, it just did not seem worth my time overall, as I found myself wanting to talk back to the author so frequently.

It was a fairly easy read and humorous at times, but the content learned is pretty appalling. I found it a bit hard at times to keep all the names and references straight since I was not able to always read a chapter completely at one time. I expect this would be an eye-opener for many

Even though his suggestions appear to be very common sense and logical, I have ever seen this material presented in such a way, with this angle and so approachable and doable. It makes so much sense. I plan to re-read the book soon, just to fortify the message. I have already recommended the book to several people and have a feeling I will do so more often. It has already helped me to see things form a different perspective and to be less upset about various annoyances that used to bug me a whole lot more.

While some of the things he says I had figured out myself already, in many cases he goes much further than I had dreamed possible and puts things into perspective. So much in the Bible now makes so much more sense to me! I look forward to drawing on what I learned in future discussions about Christianity and the Bible, I have more ground to stand on now. And I plan to recommend this book to my SIL and to discuss it with her, as she has a very different stance on Christianity than I do...

  • The Birth Partner: Everything You Need to Know to Help a Woman Through Childbirth, Second Edition

I think this book is not just a must-read, but a must-have for all expectant parents. A great resource for the birth support team. Having it on hand during labor is helpful since the book is set up for quick reference, it is easy to look something specific up pretty quickly, if ideas are needed.

  • Impact of Birthing, Practices on Breastfeeding: Protecting the Mother and Baby Continuum

This should be a must-read for all OBs, midwives and nurses working with pregnant and laboring/birthing women. And researchers should take note of all the common practices that have not been studied yet, that are not evidence-based at all, and where research is desperately needed. Highly recommended reading also for doulas and lactation consultants.
