I think you are right about Neville Shute, about been the best unknown writer, although he's well-known to Australians. His works would have been read by a previous generation now. Have you read or seen the movie of his most famous/popular book, A Town Like Alice? If I might recommend a first-rate contemporary Australian storyteller, try Tim Winton.

forget it. I spent seven years trying to teach people to write, and now no one thinks it matters because they all write on the internet. : ) But I guess it was a good idea.

I do like some southerners a lot: Flannery O'Connor, then there's another one whose name I can never remember. Name some guys and I'll get it maybe.

Hey Upland. Nope, I didn't attend Suncoast. I've never attended school in Florida; only went there to visit family. How have you been doing?

Thanks! I am already enjoying the BTS discussions. I like your "Looking for Bugs". I see that you are in Florida--does your son even like palmetto bugs?

oh, yes, I have read clyde edgerton! You are southern! I'd forgotten him because I've probably sold them or put them in boxes. Not enough room and I need to get out the ones I haven't read. Plus I'm such an Anglophile. : (

But I did read a number of Welty's short stories. I did like her a lot.

Are you kidding? I have not yet begun to list them all. Though I fear to admit I'm not great fan of Faulkner's novels. Why do they introduce 14-year-olds to Faulkner by making them read "As I lay Dying." "My mother is a fish"! "My mother is a fish"! Not sure even what else I read. Absolom! Absolom! I think

Are you from the south? You sound like it. I taught in a southern university and they had a lot of classes with a "southern" angle--not only literature but economics and business and all else. I had a "yankee" student point that out to me and say he liked it. I thought it was interesting--Maryand is not south enough, really, to be considered Southern.

That is hilarious. Getting kicked out of a Starbucks group...hmmm. You are correct , Community Coffee is specific to the south and is a wonderful coffee. As a matter of fact, when we go home to visit, I purchase several lbs of it , as there is only one place to buy it here in OK. NOLA is a wonderful city, with much history and culture. It gets a bad wrap sometimes, but the city pulses with life , mystery, and adventure. I am hoping to take a trip there in November, fingers crossed. Nice to meet you :0)

    Hey Up,

User Emma A. ( Poeple...wow ) posted this crazy chain mail quiz thing in our Emma thread. Is it possible for you delete the post and kick this ridiculous user out? Or if you'd like, I can just tell her that sort of stuff isn't welcome. From her profile, I think she's about 12 yrs old. Not welcome!!

Might be interested. I know I really liked the hiding place but I couldn't through the sequel. It tried too hard to be inspirational and it didn't do much for me.

Oh, I sensed a rather unsightly puff of elitism there so I wasn't surprised.

(Looking at your bookshelf I'm quite ashamed of myself. The mere thought of the amount of typing and cataloguing that I'll have to do gives me a headache. Gosh.)

I may imbibe gently at a reserved table, and while the proprietors are busy with the creamy eclairs and jammy doughnuts (one ponders a creamery jammier doughair), I sneak a shot of whiskey into my substance and glazy I smile.
