This is a light story, but interesting in that you'll learn some southern ( U.S.) culture along with the bee industry ( not sure that's the correct phraseology). Since you seem to like mostly non-fiction, I'm not certain this book will please you. I do enjoy Sue Kidd Monk's style of writng.

You may like it; but at some parts the story sort of sagged a bit. I watched the movie by chance on a flight; it comes quite close; that by itself a big thing to bring a movie close to a book. The book is somewhat context specific but also not because after the initial part (once the story moves out of the segregated part) it doesn't seem to be so much so. There is a bit of surrealism and a bit of mysticism etc; there is also a good depth of understanding of human psychology and relationships. Overall it is definitely a very interesting book. Not a shallow one by any means. I liked both the book and the movie.

I like The Secret Life of Bees and would recommend reading it. I actually enjoyed the book over the movie (but isn't that always the case). :-) Sue Monk Kidd's writing style and character development is superb in this novel. Happy Reading!
