There is nothing big to tell about my self, more to tell about my shelf ;) I read a lot, many different kind of books and authors. I´ve been reading something all the time after I learned how to read. Few past years my books and readings have been dependent of my studies in university, there has been too little time to read anything else.
I love fiction books because of escapism they`re offering. I love (auto)biografies to learn how somebody I respect has lived. I love nonfiction books because knowledge I desire. I also love strip cartoons, like Enki Bilal and many others. My major interests have been lately on shamanism and runes, if I just have time to read something else than books for my exams.
There is somekind of list of books written in Finnish I haven`t found through Selfari (yet).
Johanna Sinisalo: Ennen päivänlaskua ei voi. ( Translated into English: Troll: A love Story) Beautyful story mixing urban legends, folktales, and fragmented postmodernism. Written in a good style, a bit confusing at first but make story as a whole when you get into it.
Sankarit (so far not found in Finnish or any translations) Again, interesting story, storyline and charasterics are taken from Kalevala and rewritten into modern finnish society, using ironic tone. I liked more authors other book: Troll: A love story.
Timo K. Mukka: Maa on syntinen laulu. Author is one of most argued Finnish writers. He writes in very strong way, and using northern (Laplands) dialect of Finnish. I just love it. His characters are down- to-earth, uncompromising and painful way very beautyful too. Tabu. Into same book than Maa on syntinen laulu.
Eeva Joenpelto: Vetää kaikista ovista. One very famous Finnish (woman) author. I dont`t like her style or her books... Got this one from My dad.. :D
Taina Nygård: Erilaisten historiaa. Nonfiction book (cultural history) about diffirent minorities (like prostitutes and gypsies) in Finlands history.
Titus Hjelm: Saatananpalvonta, media ja suomalainen yhteiskunta. Hjelms Doctoral thesis. Interesting book about satanworshipping in Finland, he is using theory of moral panic in his study as a point of view. Titus is also an keyboardplayer in band Thunderstone. I respect his work, as an researcher and as an musicant, even the band is not "my kind of teacup".
Vesa Puuronen:Johdatus nuorisotutkimukseen. Summary of Finnish culture studies, mostly about youth studies, subculture studies etc. Used this one when I tried to start doing my Master thesis.
Ritva Raippa: Punkin kaksi vuosikymmentä. Etnografiaa ja punkkareiden elämänkertoja. Her Doctoral thesis about Finnish punk scene. Argued and criticized into punkscene..
Boris Hurtta: Lumentuloa ei voi estää. A troll story in spirit of H.P.Lowecraft. Again, mixing Finnish folktales and contemporary reality for a bit opressive way, fantasy and horror meet each other.
Tangerin isokala. Haven`t read this one, yet..
Alkio: Kootut teokset. Haven`t read this and probably i am bored to death before im starting to read it... Alkio was Finnish man, who dried to civilize our primitive folk... yeah, right:D
Taina Kinnunen: Pyhät bodarit. An ethnography of bodybuilders in Finland and U.S.A. Authors Doctoral thesis. Taina Kinnunen is somekind "inteligent role model" for me. Its not easy to find woman author, and reasearcher who is really impressing me like Taina Kinnunen. I respect her, a lot.
Ensio Kataja: Riimujen viisaus. Guide for a true Odinbelievers, and mystery of runes. Practical little book, when you are searching your own path of spirit. I like this, there is no "new age" shit on it.
Harri Paasio: Riimut- viikinkien oraakkeli. A nice little book about runes.
Also, I have read Kai Aaltonen`s book Sanat ovat lohikäärmeitä, again runebook in Finnish. I don`t own this, edition is sold out ages ago. Im really trying to find this book to my IRL shelf.
Anna- Leena Härkönen: Häräntappoase. I really love this book. It tells a story of young Finnish peoples in countryside, near where im coming from. The way author writes is hilarious, great, so alive and honest. I really hope, that if this book is someday translated into Englisih, or some other languages, the persona who is going to do the translation is VERY good, otherwise the point of story will be lost.
