I see myself as one of the young, lonely and aimless persons in a Haruki Murakami novel.

"People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care, but things have changed
Lot of water under the bridge, Lot of other stuff too
Don't get up gentlemen, I'm only passing through"

  • The Catcher in the Rye
    • Rated 5 stars

Let Salinger catch you NOW If there is one book that could change the way you think about those kids, teenagers and what becomes of them in adulthood it is 'Catcher in the Rye'. The book is a must read for all ages especially any teenager confused about the workings of the world around them. Salinger tells the tale in unique words of Holden who learns about the world as he comes to NY from his boarding school after he has failed again from yet another educational institution. He has promised to 'apply himself' so many times that you know he has really tried. He smokes and has height and hair of a person older than him. He talks to strangers at the bar, gets a hooker to his room in NY hotel and gets beaten up for being the wise-crack he is. He can stand up again though. He visits his kid sister without really being home. He doesnot want his parents to worry about him and his grades. He remembers his dead brother and also confides in his sweet kid sister that he will be going away for ever. The kid however with her unconditional love for her brother makes Holden have a change of heart. Catching innocent children from falling into the 'phoney' world is what he wants to do. He doesn't still know whether he will 'apply himself' next academic year. Greatest soul transforming book ever to come out.

  • A Wild Sheep Chase: A Novel
    • Rated 4 stars

Let's get that sheep and we will be happy Mediocre lives we live in this mediocre modern world. Told in first-person perspective by a man whose name the author doesn't mention, this is a story about our aimless quest for something we don't have. We chase it and when we have it we take it for granted. 'The Man' (for lack of a name) has divorced his wife or rather the wife decided to call it quits with a loser who lives like a zombie. Working at an ad firm with his business partner 'the man' sleepwalks through his life. Then he chases and wins over the affection of a girl with 3 occupations who has an ear so magnificient ... you would have to read Murakami's description to get the picture. Then suddenly a picture of sheep grazing among the mountains brings him to a Boss's experienced assistant who coolly involves 'the man' into a hunt for a special sheep with a star on its back. This Boss controls everything but he has lost the sheep so 'the man' has to find it or face doom. Out among Northern hills 'the man' faces great characters such as the Sheep Professor, the Sheep Man, his old friend The Rat and his own mirror image. Then on, you just keep turning the pages as it gets murkier, more thrilling, cold, breathtakingly beautiful and sad. If you think too much into what 'the man' thinks and goes through then probably you would go to the looney-ville and check in. A thoroughly enjoyable and engaging novel from the author who knows the soul of young, lonely, aimless men of this world.

Laugh Out Loud, People who have seen the earlier Seasons of "Seinfeld" (TV Sitcom) are aware of Jerry Seinfeld's stand up comedy act which appears at the beginning & end of each episode. All those jokes are present in this book. I have never seen Jerry S on stage doing his routine, so I found plenty of new jokes in the book. Others may find the book full of his stage acts. Jerry S doesnot talk about himself or his life except for a small 2 page note at the beginning. Readers won't know/understand the person "Jerry Seinfeld" any better after reading this book. The book is Hilarious. He tells us the delivery & timing now depends on us because this is a book. The Humour covers almost all aspects of life such as Dating, Clothes/Fashion, Personal Upkeep, Friends, Travelling, Jobs, Going Out and our Life as we grow. I had a great time acting out these jokes in front of my friends. ENJOY and Laugh Out Loud.

  • Autobiography of a Yogi (Reprint of Original 1946 Edition)
    • Rated 5 stars

Best book for possibilities of Self Awareness and Spiritual insight A great introduction to saints, saintly lifestyle, Yogic siddhis, miracles, Krishna Consciousness, etc is easily found in the engaging book of Sri Paramahansa Yogananda - Autobiography of a Yogi . It has given inspiration to do spiritual labour to me whenever I glance at its devotional pages. The book describes Sri Yogananda's childhood and eternal quest for enlightenment, in the initial chapters, mostly through running from home to reach the majestic Himalayas. He then moves on to a search for a Guru who would mould his spiritual being. Sri Yogananda gives greatly astonishing first-hand descriptions of miracles he witnessed as he is blessed to have audience with saints in India and abroad. After finding his Guru, Sri Yukteshwar Giri, in an equally mysterious way, he goes on to describe his life in the ashram. His guru convinces the young Yogananda to pursue higher education and small miracles helps the latter to do so. The purpose of this degree was to get a platform in the Western world to preach the virtues of Kriya Yoga technique and inform them of the vast & rich heritage of the Vedas. After travelling abroad to various destinations, giving lectures to packed halls; Yogananda founded the Self-Realisation Fellowship in USA as a Western wing of the Yogoda Satsang Society he had already founded in India. Living the monastic life, he gives us graphic descriptions of Divine guidance, of the Yogic states in meditation, of miracles and all the glory of the world he himself blessed with his ever-pleasing smile. Working with saints, devotees, philosophers and scientists alike; Sri Paramahansa Yogananda in his book provides us an unique and among the first, best accounts of an enlightened Yogi. There are many and I mean many quotable quotes and wise words given here. There are also wonderful photographs in the original book, if you can get it, from the Yogoda Satsang Society or the Self-Realisation Fellowship. Indian readers will find the book easy to follow. Westerners may find the descriptions far-fetched or unreal. All the terms used have been clearly defined in English so language is no barrier. If Luther Burbank, Nobel Prize winners - Tagore & Gandhi, scientist Bose and the world's Holiest Saints found virtue in Sri Yogananda, how can you not see it?
