First things first, I am NOT a turtle!
I am, however, a hygienist dwelling in the midst of God's country in the wonderful state of Alabama.
Now, for some of you that just put many stereotypical thoughts in your heads.......but, as you are true readers, those immediate thoughts will be dismissed since you know, thru the many books you have consumed, that we, of the southern states, do actually possess more than 4 teeth each and have the capability to form sentences and participate in intellectual banter.
But you will also know that we, of the southern states, do love to talk and tend to take many sentences and compact them into one long one. For that, I do apologize.
I began my love of the written word long before I could even read it myself. My introduction to reading was in the lap of my father, sitting in his favorite chair, with the Birmingham News opened wide. The funny papers were my primer. Not one day of funnies were missed, and the Sunday funnies were my favorites......not just bacause it was a bigger section.......but because since it WAS a bigger section, I got to listen to my daddy read to me longer. I still have that same chair in my house. I plan to read the funnies to my grandchildren from that chair.
In the time that I was growing up, Kindergartens were very new! I was blessed to have a mother that felt education was vital and I needed the head start that others wouldn't get. So, Mrs. Betty Thomas was my first teacher. The cirriculum for K-school had not really been set, so there were many days of coloring and being read to, but no learning of the words themselves. We did learn our letters and numbers, but the forming of words was to come in First Grade.
I remember the day I learned to read! I read our entire book (the Dick and Jane primers that were so popular in the 60's) before I got home from school. When I did arrive home, I flew off the bus, waving the book over my head, loudly declaring, "I can read! I can read"
My enthusiasm for books has never declined. I love them all. I may not like them all, but I do love them. You can learn much about a society, a person, an era or a thought, just by listening to how the words were placed on the paper.
Ahhh.......yes, books are my friends.
PS..... as for the turtle picture, it came from the National Geographic's top 20 pictures of 2008. The collection is fabulous! Look it up online, I think you'll enjoy them all. I'm just a little partial to turtles.
As for the screen name, well, turtle people can figure it out, even without the chelonia additions.
