Read Rough Guide to Film. It's pretty impressive. It lists down 800 directors who have made an impact on film since the beginning. It's like having imdb.com in a book, except the directors are pre-selected. It even has Neil Marshall, Park Chan Wook and Eddie Romero, a Filipino director famous for his blood island films.
