I'm into the quirky, simple, brainy, weird, evocative side of contemporary fiction, with a penchant for everything Japanese. When the mood strikes me, I'll veer off into epic drama, African American poetry, historical classic or the odd biography. But, in the end, I'll always end up back where I started...

I have to agree, I like how Murakami's mind works. So i suppose anything I say about his work is slightly biased. (Un)fortunately I can relate to him in more ways than one. And yes,he cracks me up too.

Ah France. I suppose you'd have to depend on online shopping then? I'm currently reading Joseph Conrad. I recently acquired a copy of a Portable Conrad (one book for most of his work) which im slowly reading through. His descriptions are very detailed, but he writes about sailors, ships, and the sea so its difficult to imagine especially when he talks about the technical terms for ship parts. :)

    Hi there.
I saw that you recently added Murakami's Memoir. It seems to have gotten mixed reviews. I actually like it.
I was looking at unaccustomed earth in the bookstore recently, hope you can tell me how it is. I'm quite hesitant trying to read new authors.

    anyway, see you around.

    ok, thanks :)
    yes, that's the problem
if i don't address it right away, it spreads
there is a long history as to why i dislike teo
    i'll spare you the details
but i know why it is so tempting to call me that
i know that even my students call me that (teo-chan) behind my back though i've never said anything about that

the introduction was quite impressive i found and the first 2 chapters grabbed my undivided attention
    thus so far so good
will give you more details when i'm done
though from what i understand it's so dense i might not be able to read it quickly but will need time to digest its complexities...
meanwhile, favour: please don't call me teo, especially now that you seem to be influencing others too ;-(

i've heard such good things from different people over time that i had to pick it up. i added it to a few hours ago but won't actually be starting it until tomorrow (in the train)
i'll let you know what i think for sure...

I noticed your name as the most recent person to read Sputnik Sweetheart on that books page when I was marking it read. Strange coincidence.

What did you think? I'm not sure.. but I think I liked it... a lot.

Hmm..that DOES sound like an interesting book. I'll try to check it out. And the blurb you quoted tells me im going to like the book. Hopefully i do find one here. I'm not much into online book buying. Ah yes, you would probably like 'i have the right..'
This is my first try in reading coetzee, so i have yet to find out if i like his style. And yes, the memoir i mentioned is indeed 'what i talk about...' I found a copy, almost bought it. But i promised myself to read most of those i recently acquired before buying anything new. A difficult task, nonetheless necessary. :)

Hey. Yeah, I have the right to destroy myself, was an easy read. Wasn't too thick. I actually liked it. Then again i like the sterility and coldness of the author's portrayal of suicide. The conflicts within and between characters is juxtaposed with art. Its a good book, i think you'd like it. It was my first try in reading a Korean-written novel.
"Be with you"? How's it so far?
I'm currently reading "Youth: Scenes from a provincial life" By JM Coetzee. Its interesting so far, highly narrative not much dialog. Hmm... I hope to read My Century by Gunter grass after Coetzee. Ah well, too many books on the reading list. Im also planning to get a hold of Murakami's Memoir.

    Hi Ms. Rose,
    Oh, I'd definitely recommend Embers!
There are a ton of other books I haven't updated Shelfari with as well, but should try to do so one of these days.

    hey long time!
hope all is well with you
actually, it's because i've come back home for the summer
went to my storage room yesterday and found there these books i owned but had forgotten about completely
i joined shelfari sometime after my yearly pilgrimage here
meanwhile, i'm hoping to get to the ones in the back before i leave
i've always wanted a type of inventory but those in the back have been there over 10 years so it's going to be quite a job :-S
meanwhile the murakami books that i just added are the ones i had taken to a trip to thailand and had greatly disappointed me
i think i might have told you before
i didn't really enjoy his short stories
birthday stories i also didn't like too much
they are mostly stories written by others that he had enjoyed
and then he added a story or 2 of his
you might like them though as you also enjoy his short stories
i'm looking forward to after dark (still and despite the negative reviews) and what i talk about when i talk about running
i'm also wondering if i'll be able to resist the 2009 diary
it think they had people like me in mind ;)-
i did see toni takitani recently though
    and loved it
also got my hands on hear the wind sing
which i thought was very nice
i'm not sure what he's on about
if i could get my first novel to be that good!
what i'm wondering about though is vintage murakami (from his official website)
do you know what that is all about?
    ps: like your new avatar!

i reread taichi yamada's book recently, lent it to a friend and also offered the japanese version to zen. i can't seem to get enough of it. thanks again for recommending it!

thanks for the recommendation ms rose
i'm always looking for a refreshingly different book about japan
i'm leaving in a week and so not likely to take it with me (last week at school!!!)
but luckily i won't be running out of things to read
as there will be a few left behind by other travellers
my main concern now is how to transport those i've prepared to take
without facing the excess baggage fees for the internal flights :^S
really greedy when it comes to books
    happy holidays!
