A midwest boy--raised in Minnesota--Tobin grew up in a single parent household.

Vacations in the summer were as cheap as possible, which meant camping on the edge of the Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe Area with stacks of library books on "vacation loan" (something that seems to have disappeared at most public libraries). There he would consume often a book a day, reading late into the night by the hiss of a coleman lantern.

If there is a gene that has something to do with artist pursuit -- regardless of measurement of talent -- then perhaps that gene is passed down from his grandmother, who was a member of PEN international and his mother who is an artist.

Unfortunately, it is a "selfish gene" and does not concern itself with profitability, nor rational decision making.

Currently in the Seattle area where a 6 year old daughter keeps him feeling young. « less
