Reading is my passion. I am a happy Kindle owner and do most of my reading digitally these days. My favorite genres are mysteries, historical mysteries, and historical fiction/romance, but I have a pretty ecclectic reading taste and enjoy many other genres as well. My "keeper shelf" contains many of my favorites that I reread regularly. I... more »

I am so thrilled that Marsha Canham is writing again. This sequel to The Iron Rose features Gabriel Dante, brother to Juliet and daughter of Simon. The story picks up a couple of days after the end of TIR. We don't get many pirate adventures these days so this is a breath of fresh air.

Gabriel makes a fine, swashbuckling hero who is intelligent, brave, honorable, and daring. As the son of Simon Dante, the Pirate Wolf, this is no surprise. He has a softer side that not many people have seen. Enter heroine Eva Chandler. I liked her very much. She is strong, smart, practical, and loyal - a good match for the Captain. The tale is full of adventure, pirate treasure, evil villains, and romance.

That said, I don't think there was as much "history" in this book as in earlier books. I would have liked a bit more of this. I also missed the rest of the Dante clan and would have liked to have had at least an appearance by some of the family.

I am haoping that Canham is back in the groove and that it won't be another 8 years before her next book. I am hoping for Jonas' story next.

This was a delightful road romance that had me laughing out loud at times, smiling contentedly, and sighing in spots at the sweetness and the romance. I really loved Colin and Minerva and watching their relationship develop and grow was very satisfying.

I wasn't real crazy about the first book in this series but am glad that I kept reading. I'll look forward to A Lady By Midnight.

Perhaps it was my state of mind when I read this book, but I found the plot confusing and convoluted in places. At times I wasn't quite sure what was going on. Lots of twists and turns that I didn't always follow. I could have done with less of this plot thread and more of the personal stories.

I was more interested in the resolution of the Blackthorn brothers personal issues, mainly what it was the Marquess wanted to tell all three of his sons together. I suspected that they might not be illegitimate after all but had not guessed the details of this story line. Everything was all wrapped up neat and tidy at the end - after all, this is a romance novel with a guaranteed HEA.

It was fun to spend a Christmas in VR. Carr continues to draw us in with her nostalgic small town traditions - this time it's Christmas. And again we feel the welcoming, family-like nature of VR. And as with all of the other books in the series, we reconnect with the gang at Jack's Bar. Jack continues to be a father-figure to many of the young men/ex-soldiers who end up in VR like Denny.

Like many of the characters in Carr's books, these two have a history of a botched relationship. They have a past! We see them reconnect as older, wiser, more understanding people who are willing to look at the past clearly and admit to past mistakes. I like that about Carr's characters. They get past the blame, reevaluate and move on.

I liked both Denny and Becca and enjoyed seeing them rekindle the flame of their first love and develop a more mature, understanding relationship. They care about each other and are committed and an HEA is likely for them. Denny has found his niche as an organic farmer and Becca remembers how committed she is to teaching kids. I see a long and happy life for them in VR.
Another solid entry in this favorite, long-running series.

This entry #17 in Carr's Virgin River Series is another solid read. I love VR and always enjoy the new stories and catching up with the "regulars." We again have a couple who thinks they do not want or cannot have a committed relationship. This trope is common in Carr's VR series but somehow the story and characters always seem to have something a bit different and it works for me.

Connor and Leslie are both likeable characters who draw you in and make you want to root for their HEA. What I continue to appreciate about Carr's characters is that they grow over the course of the story and become stronger and better people. And that is truly the case here, too. Connor and Leslie easily blend in with the other transplants in VR.

It was good to see more of Brie and Mike in this story. They tend to be peripheral characters in the series and I wish they played a more prominent role. Brie and Mike's story was one of my favorites so it was good to reconnect with them. It was also fun to get an update on Dan and Cheryl.

Carr continues her strong writing and wonderful storytelling in her long-running Virgin River series. With so many books in the series and so many characters introduced along the way, it would be easy to clutter the stories with a "cast of thousands." Carr gives us just enough of the major players to make the reader feel that she is up-to-date on the goings-on in VR. I truly feel as if VR is a real place and that I know all of these people. Sometimes I find myself wondering what so-and-so is doing!

Dylan and Katie are interesting, multi-faceted characters. Like many who come to VR they have personal "baggage." Part of the appeal of Carr's books is to see how people get beyond their pasts and forge ahead in a new direction. That is the case here.

This is a very sweet story on a lot of levels. I really liked Katie and Dylan and so wanted them to realize that they were meant for each other. I loved how Dylan was able to resist the lure of Hollywood and come up with a clever way to take advantage of his contacts to keep his business afloat. He really was done with that life and finally realized that he was different from his family because of how and where he was raised by his grandmother.

This series is consistently in the solid "B/B+" range for me and every once-in-awhile, an "A" read slips in there. I'll keep reading!

Another strong entry in the VR series. I appreciate the continued high quality of this series. With so many stories and characters from earlier books, Carr does a nice job of keeping us up-to-date on many of the major players. I always enjoy getting caught up with "the gang."

I liked Kelly, Lief, and Courtney. This book was as much about Courtney as it was about Kelly and Lief. Her story was well-written and believable. My heart broke for her when all of her backstory was revealed; no wonder she had "issues." Kids at that age are so vulnerable and mentally are not capable of totally rational thought like an adult no matter how smart they are. Her fears were real. And I admired Lief for his total dedication to doing what was best for her.

I was a bit diappointed in Kelly's decision to leave VR. I did understand that she wasn't sure that Courtney could ever accept her and that she believed that Lief should concentrate on her. But under the circumstances, I would have liked to see her more willing to keep trying. Courtney was making progress and she would have come around. And I think Lief promising Courtney that he wouldn't marry was not realistic and not very adult. He backed himself into a corner because that promise would be very hard to keep.

I really liked this VR romance between Jillian and Colin. Both the H/H were interesting, well-drawn characters that captured my heart. These 2 were so well-matched and their love for each other very true and deep. I could totally see Colin's need to want to pursue what he believed he wanted and needed to restore what he saw as his "real" life. After what happened to him and knowing the kind of man he was, this was totally believable. And I admired Jilly's courage in supporting this decision no matter how much it hurt her. She knew she might be able to hold him but would never be sure it was what he wanted. This was definitely a case of "if you love someone, set them free." Colin needed to discover on his own what was really important to him. That ending was a sigh inducing event!

I am getting caught up on Carr's Virgin River Series. It felt like I was coming ome after a long time away. I do enjoy getting a peak at the lives of the Virgin River "regulars." The longer the series goes on, the tougher it gets but I think Carr gives us enough to feel as if are up-to-date.

I enjoy Clay and Lily's story. They were both interesting characters and I was fascinated by the tidbits of Native American culture and tradition that were part of who they were as people. I so totally agreed w/Dane's speech to Lily near the end of the book that she needed to move on from the trauma of so long ago. I know it was a life-changer for her but... And I was glad that she came to her senses on her own and realized that she was strong and no longer a victim. I am looking forward to the next book in the line-up.

This independently published mystery was a quick read. The premise was interesting although there weren't a lot of surprises in the plot. Characters were pretty "stock" and weren't developed in too much depth. It did keep me reading so I guess that says something.
