As Shelfari's design guy, I'm half artist and half computer geek. I'm really into User Interface Design and CSS/HTML coding, so my real world book collection is about half art/design books and half programming books. While I read mostly non-fiction books, I'm hoping that this job will inspire me to tackle some of the classics that my beautiful... more »

I listened to the abridged audiobook version of this title and found it helpful but dull. I had heard good things about this book from friends, and there is definitely wisdom to be gleaned from the book, but it felt like everything was over-explained. If you manage a company, you should make yourself aware of the concepts presented here, but I would recommend the abridged version.

This is a must read for anyone who designs web sites professionally. Not all websites have a social focus, but all websites can benefit by becoming more social. Joshua Porter explains how to build features and flows that focus on getting users from "unaware" to "passionate user" status through well-designed and thoughtful design. The book is packed with practical tips and ideas for getting the most out of your site. Highly recommended!

This isn't your typical collection of corporate logos. It's full of logos that seem best suited to snowboarding, fringe record labels, and other alternative brands. Don't get me wrong, it's a great collection and definitely will help broaden your perspective, but if you're looking for inspiration for that next logo, few of the ideas in this book would work for mainstream clientele.

In some ways this is the book that made web standards mainstream. I know several people who were exposed to the concept of web standards and thoroughly convinced of their necessity through the reading of this classic. If you haven't already been converted to the movement, it's long overdue. Grab a copy of Designing with Web Standards right away.

This insightful explanation of the subconscious mind was both thought-provoking and entertaining. Gladwell discusses the psychology of split-second decision-making with interesting real-world examples. I was fascinated by the stories of how people's initial "gut" reactions were often more accurate and useful than the ones their conscious mind came up with after careful consideration.

This entire series is great when you're in need of visual inspiration. There are some really great letterhead and logo ideas and it should help you out of your creative block quite nicely.

It's my least favorite of the series, but it definitely has it's great moments. Like the other books, this is definitely recommended to old and young readers.

  • Foundation ActionScript Animation: Making Things Move! (Foundation)

If you're a Flash user, I can't understate the importance of learning to code your animations (versus using the timeline). It's not nearly as difficult as you might think at first, and the flexibility and control you gain will blow you away. This book is an excellent introduction to programmatic animation in Flash. It's easy to follow and covers a few interesting sample projects.

  • The Hobbit

I personally don't like The Hobbit as much as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it's still a great book. It seems a little more like a children's book in parts. If you like the LotR trilogy, you should definitely read this.

How can you not love Tom Sawyer?! One of Twain's most lovable characters and best books. It's a pretty easy read too.
