    Whoa, I totally missed your note. I did read Chanda's Secrets but long before Shelfari. But I have Chanda's War on my shelf. I think the author has some background in Africa, can't remember what. The books read authentically to me at least.

    Do you know of "Kami and the Yaks" by Andrea Stenn Stryer? I first heard about it today at the Newbery/Caldecott announcements. It won the Schneider Family Book Award.

    Born to Rock: There are some implied scenes of rock-tour-on-the-road life if you know what I mean, but the hero is clean. In fact, he gets fed up by the whole scene. Other: adult immaturity, a skeezy manager, and the hero falls in love with his longtime female friend (and spends time alone with her). Nothing graphic, all implied. Your call!
