    Almost Home

    by Jessica Blank
    • Rated 5 stars

It was eye-opening story for me, when I think of someone homeless a teenage runaway doesn’t pop into my head. Yet this is an issue that affects more than 1.5 million teens. Amongst all the books I’ve read of the elite and fortunate it was refreshing and at the same time deeply disturbing to read about the other end of the spectrum. I truly admire Jessica’s compassion for this subject and even more so for bringing this topic to attention. This is one of those books that will make an impact on the way you think of the world. I hope to see more from Jessica Blank in the future.

Whew! This is my favorite book of the three. Tithe was the first faery novel I read, well dark faery novel, so I had to figure out some of the faery terminology, like the whole glamour thing. Then being one of those people that love the likes of Meg Cabot and Sarah Dessen’s wholesome, leading ladies, I wasn’t used to seeing young characters drinking, doing drugs, just being so unwholesome! I mean whoa! But then that is what made these novels so cool and different and refreshing! I love the darkness and the edginess! I’m totally faery-punkified!

This is one of the most compelling books I’ve ever read. It is right up there with Picoult’s Nineteen Minutes. This is definitely one of those books that makes you look at the way you treat people and how fragile we are as humans. I cried, I laughed, I felt. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in people ranging in the ages 15-24. If you know someone who has talked about committing suicide, please don’t take it lightly. You might be the one person they are reaching out to.

This is the third novel by Laurie Halse Anderson that I have had a chance to read. I love her writing style, and I especially loved this historical fiction. I had remembered learning about the yellow fever epidemic, but I never knew the real impact that it had. It was also interesting in learning about the true history that Anderson portrayed in her book. I became immense in Mattie’s daily activities and for the fight of her life. Although Speak is still my favorite novel by Anderson, I highly reccomend Fever 1793.

Wake was quick paced and thrilling! The characters were well developed and the relationship between Janie and Cabel constantly kept me guessing. I was really hoping that Cabel wasn’t just a big jerk! I felt the emotional trauma that Janie was forced to face and it made me respect her character even more. If you still haven’t read Wake, this is one of those books you don’t want to miss. I know I will be anxiously awaiting Fade! (Feb. 2009)
