Like alcoholism, I think being an English Major is something you're never really "cured" of.

Hi! I've been on vacation so am just now getting to respond to email & notes. I always enjoy reading Barbara Pym--her writing is so rich for me. I liked A Few Green Leaves very much. Of course she's not your girl if you're after exciting plot or romance, etc. Her forte is interesting characters you care about, which is enough for me. Let me know what you think of it. Her weakest novel (I have heard and agree) is Crampton Hodnet--nearly impossible to find now. Will be interested to see what you think :-)

Theophania: I noticed you posted on Poppet's profile that you had failed to find four Pym titles. Check out Booksfree.com. It's like Netflix, except they send you paperbacks. For eight bucks a month they send me many things I can't find anywhere else. They filled in the gaps on Pym for me.

Hello! Looks like lots of people are talking to you about Barbara Pym. I just finished Quartet in Autumn this morning (the third Pym book I've read in a row). I feel like a real Pym junkie. What is it about her? To me, she seems to have so much insight into lonely people. She's terrific. Hope you're having a good Monday!

I've read all of Pym and I like "Crampton Hodnet" the best of the bunch. Great review of "Tom Jones," by the way. I'm another incurable English major.

I'd guess one of the Pyms you're having trouble finding is Crampton Hodnet, which I think has been out of print for a long time--I found it in England at a little used book store--was so excited (though it definitely was not her finest writing hour)! Tell me what you're looking for--maybe I have an extra copy I could send you, because I have two copies of some (self-confessed Pym junkie that I am). I've heard that Drabble's Red Queen is really good--let me know if you think so when you get around to reading it. So many books....

Hi! Saw your note re: Barbara Pym. She's my all time favorite writer, and Excellent Women is my favorite of her novels. Did you know there's a Pym Society that meets, I think yearly--at least that used to be the case--found it on the Net. Wondering if you might like Margaret Drabble's Summer Birdcage..she's not Pym (who is?) but it's much in the same vein. I'm not a big Drabble fan though. I think I'll shut up for now :-)

Hi there! I just finished reading Some Tame Gazelle -- my first Barbara Pym book. Loved it! I'm going to start Excellent Women this week (i just read your review of it). Pym reminds me of Gaskell's Cranford and Sarah Orne Jewett's Country of the Pointed Firs. Have you read either one of those?

Dickens isn't for everyone. I too enjoy Hardy, the Brontes, and George Eliot. However, I've never gotten through The Mill on the Floss, even after numerous attempts. I've also never finished Charlotte Bronte's Shirley. Alas, now you've found me out . . .

    HI:)
I know how what you mean...I was feeling very alone when it came to Outlander...a good friend of mine is a rabid fan of the series and told me I just had to read it. I did not like the characters that much and I thought the book was too long. Maybe the series improves with later books, but I just don't care enough to find out! Oh well...to each their own...:)

    Hi Theophania:)
I've been perusing your shelf...it is awesome. I'm happy to see that someone shares my thoughts on Outlander and Time Traveler's Wife...the plots are fascinating, but I just didn't like either book. I don't understand the hype...

I love your profile...I was English major, too...nope, there is no cure!
