My heart's desire since childhood was to become a librarian and I succeeded after brief diversions into geology and physical anthropology, as well as a few years where I thought being an oceanographer would have been cool. Since getting my face wet and bobbing around like a cork on the high seas wasn't appealing in reality - I found my niche... more »

I found this to be a fascinating read, and the second time I've been through it (the first was as an audiobook). Millard did a masterful job of weaving together the details of the expedition with the natural history of the Indians, animals and rain forest. These sidebars are never lengthy (as can be the case with authors such as Simon Winchest, Walter Isaacson or David McCullough) and they help the reader to understand the minds and hearts of the expedition members who face unbelievably difficult challenges in the unexplored Amazon region. Millard did her homework as the book also includes about 50 pages of notes and bibliography.

This recounts the disasterous expedition lead by Douglas Mawson to Antarctica and of which he was the sole survivor. That Mawson even survived at all is nothing short of miraculous. I was impressed with how the author did his research and handled this material - mainly primary accounts. As a reader, I could feel what the expedition members were experiencing, and I wasn't overburdened with unnecessary detail. This is one of the best accounts of disaster and survival that I have read recently.

I like it for the information about the artists and the age in which they lived. However the writing is flat - this could have been so much better had it been better crafted.

This is a wonderful work of oral history. How exceptional a person Jackie was to have recognized the importance to future generations of her first-person commentary.

More Vatican history than biography, still - an intriguing read.

A rugged read because of all the extraneous material that the author includes. Worth the effort, but definitely not for everyone.

Although the author has been connected with the Humane Society of the United States, including having served seven years as president and CEO, this book is relatively free from the over-emotionalism that takes hold of animal rights activists. It is disturbing yet hopeful, and a worthy investigative read for anyone interested in mankinds connection to the natural world.
