TheLibrarian

My heart's desire since childhood was to become a librarian and I succeeded after brief diversions into geology and physical anthropology, as well as a few years where I thought being an oceanographer would have been cool. Since getting my face wet and bobbing around like a cork on the high seas wasn't appealing in reality - I found my niche... more »

Thanks for the recommendation on New York, I will definitely check it out! Was looking thru your shelf (you've read so many books) and noticed you like dogs. Me too. If you haven't already read it (I didn't see it on your shelf but may have missed it), I recommend Three Dog Life by Abagail Thomas. It's a sad story, but like I find with anything, better with dogs in the mix.

yes, and even though we have strict seat belt laws, i still see (mostly immigrants, who maybe havent grasped the danger) letting their small children STAND in the front seat of a moving car!

stupidity is deadly! selfishness can be, too. but i understand selfishness and greed, even though i disagree with letting it cause harm to others, but death or major injury from stupidity is so un-understandable!

Thanks for the offer to teach me needlepoint. As for cross stitching, I seem to recall that I did learn that in my youth while crossing the prairie.

Yes, I Thought of that also. Do you have any suggestions for a new game? If so, why don't you start it? Leave the other to your discretion.

1,119--Holy cow. Is this the library you work or your library, and is that why you call yourself TheLibrarian! It will take me a while to get through your shelf to see the types of things you like, but from the looks of things, all types. I am originally from Sheboygan, by the way. I am going up to my hometown library Wednesday evening to do a book signing. Have a great weekend. I'm headed off to see Bob Dylan for the 28th time in a few minutes.

Any suggestions on 101 books on memory loss... knocking at 50 and when I'm tired, my name memory is nonexistent! The category is huge and I dislike self help books. Hoping to find a diamond in the rough. Thanks, D

Did you get my last mega-post to you? I likely should have sent it via private email instead of a chat post. I think you will love Dawkin's book. Dry in parts, but he is doing his best to cover such a huge stretch of earth history and science. Have a great Monday. Dave

Thank you, thank you for "The Greatest Show on Earth." I've been mousing around for 3-4 years trying to open my mind to the full glory and immensity of evolution. Several books lead me along the path, but this might be the first to actually enlighten me. Funny to resort to words like "glory" and "enlighten" to defend an evolutionist's manifesto against creationism, but knowledge can be just as spiritual and soulful a pursuit as religion.

You bet. I just read a great article from David Von Drehle in Time about Teddy. Over the last couple weeks I soaked up several obit tributes to the man. Von Drehle's was simply exceptional, so much so that I did a book search. Sure enough, he wrote a NY period book surrounding the Triangle Fire. I read that book, 3-4 years ago and enjoyed it.

On another note, I wish I would have read your review of, "Strength in What Remains" before I downloaded the audio book (this morning). Unlike most, I was not a huge fan of his classic, MBM (maybe it was just a bad week for me). I'll tell you what really impresses me about Kidder, his title choices. I'm a sucker for a great name and both books have a title that sells books (... at least to me).
