I am a Palestinian with a Canadian citizenship born in Libya (1963). I feel that I am a refugee by heritage with a gypsy’s spirit.
My main problem is that I love too many things, and have too many interests and hobbies that I am never sure if that is a good thing or not.
I write short stories, mostly in Arabic, although I started writing at 14 only in English for a long time, until in 1999 when inspiration came in Arabic. My Arabic short stories have appeared in Akhbar Al Adab (Cairo), Al Adab Magazine (Lebanon) and Al Bayan, Literature (UAE). My first collection of short stories in Arabic “The Scent of Cardamom,” was published by Dar Sharqiyat in 2005. I have also written as the Gypsy for the Gypsy Corner at GlobalComment.com.
I recently partnered with a friend and established a company for bilingual content and translation. I love translation. I translate my own work as well as the works of others.
In addition to my passion for languages (Arabic, English, French, Spanish - all of which I am constantly seeking to improve and perfect), I design jewelry, and I am an amateur photographer. I enjoy creating collages for my home and my many many notebooks - I think I am a notebook freak. I do a lot of crochet, knitting and embroidery, too. I believe that that inspiration flows freely between all my "creative outlets" somehow.
I am married, and I have two teenage boys (God help me :-) ). I also have two dogs. I have been in Dubai, UAE, for 10 years now. I love the sea, in all its moods, I cannot live far away from the ocean - I think I was supposed to be a dolphin.
My real bookshelf is full of books waiting their turn to be read. The problem is that, I also try to read in other languages - as if trying to keep up with the English is not impossible enough. I wish this site also had Arabic books somehow.
