    Granny Dan

I am not a Danielle Steel fan - I tried reading one or two books by her and couldn't read beyond a few pages because I just couldn't stand her writing style. But when a friend of mine said I "have to read Granny Dan," I took it on as a challenge (and because of the ballerina on the cover - I love ballerinas.)

The book was a little difficult to get through for me, because when Steel describes everything as 'delicious,' 'magical' and 'dazzling,' it makes me want to pull my hair out and scream. And I don't understand why she repeats the same lines 3-4 times - she either thinks the readers are stupid, or just can't remember. But other than that, the story was fascinating, and kept me engrossed. I loved the setting of Russia in the early 20th century..it was something different, and really interesting. And I have to admit, Danina was beautiful - like Steel reiterates throughout the book - 'in every way.' The ending brought tears to my eyes and that was enough to make me love the book.

    The Inheritance of Loss

Wow, this book covers almost every kind of loss, and every facet of loss with such raw, pure emotion. Beautifully written and put together.

    Drowning Ruth

By the time the story ended, I did not care what happened anymore. I found it boring and did not understand the relevance of so many of the characters. I gave it two stars because I did like how she wrote, just thought the story lacked excitement. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

I had always wished I'd read this book as a kid, but I realize I wouldn't have appreciated it at all. What I thought would be a fun, psychological thriller about a disorder turned out to be a serious, sci-fantasy story. Reminded me of The Picture of Dorian Gray, and even though I haven't read...

I had always wished I'd read this book as a kid, but I realize I wouldn't have appreciated it at all. What I thought would be a fun, psychological thriller about a disorder turned out to be a serious, sci-fantasy story. Reminded me of The Picture of Dorian Gray, and even though I haven't read Frankenstein, it must be a lot like it. Somehow books of this particular time period seem intent on telling people about the importance of being good, and what effects being 'evil' can have.

It was great to view the world through the eyes of an autistic boy, but it was also really frustrating when he refused to co-operate with people. Loved the story right at the start, and expected a lot from it. But the 'mystery' wasn't all that promising after all, and there wasn't much of a story after that.

    Wolf Hall

The thing about thick books is, although they take ages to complete reading, you get to really understand every character. That's probably why I loved Wolf Hall so much..and the sardonic writing style. I felt like I was back in the 1530s, and I'm glad the language was simple and easy to follow....

I've always loved the story of King Henry VIII, and this book taught me so much more about all the councillors and courtesans, and the wives and maidens of that time. LOVE everybody at Austin Friars, and I'll probably read the next book in the series if I get the chance.

    Train to Pakistan

What an incredible story. I love how the book progresses from descriptions of a slow, lethargic village with indecisive people, and then quickly snowballs into an unbelievably magnificent ending. I especially loved the four pages dedicated to our monsoons and how we all feel about...

The kind of imagery used in the book isn't going to let me forget the characters and dialogues (speaking of which, I really want to read a Hindi translation of this!) any time soon. This is the kind of book I can read over and over again, and still be shocked each time. It made me laugh and made me want to cry. Just brilliant.
