  • The Feminine Mistake: Are We Giving Up Too Much?
    • Rated 5 stars

This is an eye-opening reality check for many stay-at-home-moms. At times it can be hard to read, but the truth usually is. As a stay-at-home-mom for over 6 years, it was extremely difficult to re-enter the workforce. I also had maintained my education while I was still "at home" with my child. It was still difficult re-entering and a has been a huge adjustment for myself and for my family. If I had done it all over again, I don't know if I would have stayed home for quite so long. I would recommend this book to anyone having kids and weighing their options about staying home or working. It is very insightful and practical.

My child brought this home from the school library. An informative book on the history of pugs and their personalities. "Pugs are spoiled." Don't I know this fact because we have a spoiled rotten black pug! It also has some general info about caring for pugs. A cute kids book! Well done with the photos!

Georgia's Signers and the Declaration of Independence

by Harvey, H Jackson, Edwin, C Bridges, Kenneth, H Thomas
    • Rated 4 stars

One of the reasons why I love American history is due to my Grandma. When I was 10 years old she mentioned to me - as she was going through old dated papers and documents, that Great Uncle Lyman Hall signed the Declaration of Independence. I remember that day as if it was yesterday. She told me since I have this "famous Uncle" who sacrificed for us and for our country that I have a huge responsibility to use my "God-given" talents for good in this world. The more I learn about my Uncle Lyman Hall, the more I am amazed at his courage and strength. Uncle Lyman's home was burned by the Red Coats and many of his documents went up in flames. He and his family were constantly fleeing the Brits because their was a price on his head. He lost his wife and his son died at a very early age - not leaving any direct decendents from his lineage. One of the best parts of researching and learning about him has been meeting other distant relatives from all over the country. If any one reading this is related to Uncle Lyman Hall, please contact me and I will gladly share information I have.

  • If We Must Die: A Novel of Tulsa's 1921 Greenwood Riot (Chaparral)
    • Rated 5 stars

I love history - the good - the bad, and the ugly. Perhaps the reason why I love history so much is because of its purpose. The purpose is to teach future generations to better themselves in light of the ugliness previous generations have managed to leave us. In this book the message is very clear. Although its a novel, it is based on historical facts. Many people are unaware - even those who are native Oklahoman's - that the worst race riots - the most awful systematic destruction of the black community happened in Tulsa, Oklahoma less than 100 years ago. Personally, I have relatives who participated in the killing and burning of an entire community. These relatives would brag about their atrocious acts over the dinner table at family reunions and holiday events. Thankfully, these relatives are dead and gone and hopefully, burning in hell today for what they did in the 1920's. Not only was this just a weekend event, the entire Tulsa county and city attributed to this event when new laws were passed immediately after the riots mandating that business which had been burned were banned from ever rebuilding in Greenwood and within the city limits of Tulsa. Again, the ugly side of history and God help us if we have not learned from this.

The only Grisham book I have ever read and I read it because my father-in-law gave it to me b/c he thought I would like it. He was right! A very sad, yet true story of how the criminal system operates in this country, particularly with mentally ill people. God help us, if it continues this way.

  • In the Hands of the People: The Trial Jury's Origins, Triumphs, Troubles, and Future in American Democracy
    • Rated 5 stars

Typically, most Americans do not consider jury service as a duty or even as their 'fundamental right." Although when I have discussed with a few citizens if the threat of voting could be taken away in this country, like there it has and continues with the jury, would they not be desparate to defend it? The book discusses the instability within the jury system today and the history of the jury. So far, I think I have read this book 5 times! Although the book is a bit dated and Judge Dwyer has been deceased for a while, the book is still a valuable source of information. The book advocates for citizens to become involved in the jury system and quotes William Penn pleading to the jury to "never give away your right!"

  • What Would the Founders Do?: Our Questions, Their Answers
    • Rated 3 stars

Not a reference book, but an overall fun read. In my opinion, one should use their own discretion - but a fun insight into the Founders, if you are interested in US Constitutional history.
