Tembi

There are few life circumstances that cannot be improved by the addition of chocolate and coffee.

When in doubt, wear red.

People often wonder if I have actually read all the books I own. Don't be ridiculous. I have a job and a life.

Why do I keep buying them then? I'm stocking up for retirement. It's never too... more »

I highly recommend Invitation to a Beheading by Nabokov. This novel is discussed in "Reading Lolita in Tehran." I stopped reading the latter and read Nabokov. That helped me gain deeper insights as I read Lolita in Tehran. I have been readind a great number of books lately. Also I have been into Russian classical lit.
What are you reading lately? Write back, J

These Shelfari updates are too big of a temptation. But since you posted not one, or two but three books I have read; gotta respond.
Rather suprised that you read Ender's Game. You never struck me as a Sci-Fi gal, Tembi. So what did you think of Herr Ender? After more than a decade, I have an enduring enmity to the ending. Was rather disappointed Card took the easy way out. Saw the "surprise" plot twist coming from a mile away and it kind of took away from what I felt was an engaging tale, at least for the first three-quarters.

I've also read Lady Chatterley's Lover. Now that might be a bigger surprise! Although admittedly, I was in high school and was simply looking for the "good parts" in the book. Plus I was being a character. Typical romance novel. High-born English lady is in an unloving marriage and resorts to the stableman or huntsman to fill her needs... if I recall. Juicy sex scenes and the use of a certain four-letter vocabulary word. Scandalous in the 1920's but tame by today's standards.

We were made to read the Scarlet Letter in our junior year of high school. Was no doubt part of a plan concocted by the state education system to instill a general hatred of literature on the part of the student population. In terms of mid-19th Century American writers, the endearing works of Washington Irving would have been a better choice. But if you have to go Hawthorne, Seven Gables is the way to go.
My main complaint with Scarlet Letter is that the characters are too weak. Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale are both presented with a challenge (the man vs. society plotline) and instead of overcoming it, they fall victim to it. Particularly Arthur.
"Oh no, my love and daughter are exiled by the community. Instead of running off together to Rhode Island or Virginia, I'll leave them to their fate and carve an A into the flesh of my chest." Bah.
Even the villain of the tale, Roger Chillingworth, instead of openly expressing his animosity, chooses a passive-aggressive route of revenge.
No doubt it's my Scottish ancestory resenting the mawkish, mental struggles of these Puritan flibbertigibbits. Give the principles claymores and have the ending set in a fen at sunrise.

You need to write reviews for your books. If there is little time in the day, then keep them quick, pithy and concise. Allows your friends to get to know you better!

Hello and thank you, this site is intellectual stimulating. Do I practice witchcraft? Not really, I find it fascinating and have studied it off and on many times. I still need to list many of my other books, some of them are cookbooks, gardening, herbal, survival, computer and one of my passions Aquariums.
I noticed you in that you have many interesting books on your shelf as well.
Take care maybe we can talk books
