My first introduction to Castaneda was by a regular customer, who prefaced the books with "hey, you interested in peyote?" I thoroughly enjoyed the whole series without it occurring to me that the books were anything but fiction. Regardless, the philosophy and wisdom Castaneda presents are powerful, and have uncanny similarities with indigenous beliefs spread widely across the planet. Those books definitely lent an unprecedented perspective to my own life when I started reading them a couple years ago, but subsequent discoveries of shamanism and related topics have really astounded my sensibilities as far as what the "truth" could be.
Like you said, the question of whether or not these things really happened has little affect on the beauty of what he wrote. I haven't read the other books you mentioned, they sound really interesting. I'm curious to hear the other side of the controversy :)
Do you have any other recommendations?

Alright, so since we're officially friends now, I gotta hear your thoughts on Castaneda.
