  • When Search Meets Web Usability (Voices That Matter)
    • Rated 2 stars

I admit that I bought this for the wrong reasons. I'm a developer who was looking for more technical, code-based suggestions on improving website seo and findability. This book is aimed more at marketing managers. The book focuses more on "the why" rather than "the how".

This book has some great quotes... and is incredibly easy to digest quickly.

    jQuery: Novice to Ninja

Pretty neat book for novice jQuery users. I plan on using it as a resource rather than just reading it through and putting it down (like bookmarking, but bookmarking pages or chapters).

  • Speak Human: Outmarket the Big Guys by Getting Personal
    • Rated 2 stars

The book's website mislead me a little. After reading the book's website, I expected a 37Signals-like approach of short, to-the-point ways not to sound like a huge corporations.

However when I opened the book, I was greeted by a multi-page story about how Starbucks grew too fast for its own good. The author probably had a good point there and many others like it, but he is very long-winded in his approach.

I would not recommend this book if you're looking for a short, easy read that Speaks Human.

** I only read 5 of the available 11 chapters available at http://diveintohtml5.org/. Please bear in mind this review is based on only half of this book **

Mark Pilgrim is very thorough in his explanations of what is new in HTML5 and exactly how it works. The book is very detailed, with plenty of diagrams and links / references. The author's tone is formal yet playful when talking about larger ideas. The tone gets more technical when Mark dives into the details.

I'm a web designer; for me the book was a little on the technical side. But this book is a great reference for all questions dealing with HTML5.

The most basic book every. If you've spent 30 minutes in Twitter, you may not get much out of this book (I started reading at chapter 6). There is a decent collection of tools and third-party websites that help you get more our of Twitter; I found this the most valuable piece of the book.

Very good, quick read. Right to the point. Makes me want to keep my day job, quit my freelancing and start my own business on this side.

Good, light reading. Each testimonial is about three or four pages.

This book covers many of the fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is a massive application. although this book teaches mostly fundamentals, it covers ALL of the fundamentals (including the ones Photoshop professionals don't personally use often). This book is a great resource to have lying around to reference infrequently used tools and techniques.

  • The New Rules of Marketing and PR: How to Use News Releases, Blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing and Online Media to Reach Buyers Directly

I'm in the online media industry and encounter this stuff every day at work and at home. This was a very good refresher for me, as I was reminded of practices I forgot and even learned some new ones.
