Not my favorite Maisie Dobbs book (so far.) It just didn't seem like the Maisie I've come to know and love, although I did enjoy it.

I will continue on to the next book with high hopes for "my" Maisie to return, ;-D.

This book is a well-written thriller, reminded me of some movies I've seen, such as Deep Impact, and the like.

A worthy second book in this series, quite up to par with the first Maise Dobbs story. She may be creeping into my heart the same way Precious, from the #1 Ladies Detective Agency has.

Just really a delightful, cozy mystery.

So much better than the movie, IMHO, which wasn't bad.

  • The Secret Keeper
    • Rated 5 stars

I think I've become a Kate Morton fan. I really enjoyed The Forgotten Garden, and I may've liked The Secret Keeper even more.

Set in 2011, England, 1970s English countryside and 1930s-40s London, & Australia it is a wonderful mystery that starts off with a violent crime committed in a bucolic setting. From there, the story skillfully weaves back and forth, across multiple decades and characters to discover how, when, where and ultimately who-dun-it in a most satisflying, intriguing and even charming tale.

The characters are strong of heart, smart women, for the most part all though there are some lovely men who are true heros as well. Mothers, daughters, sisters and friends figure strongly in the story as well as family relationships of all sorts.

If you're a fan of Downton Abbey, I think you might really enjoy this book. It is set in the era that DA will be going into next season, WWII.

  • Making Sense When Life Doesn't
    • Rated 5 stars

"Life is messy. I can't avoid the chaos, but I can choose my response to the crisis." This is the premise of Cec Murphey's book and through personal stories and positive suggestions he leads the reader into ways to endure. It's about making your life better--not in spite of but because of the adversities you face.
The author has not had an easy life. His father was an alcoholic who abused him, later in life, relatives & others sexually abused him as well. He has lived on two continents and in his 60s, his home burned to the ground killing a family member inside. He speaks from experience when he says, "Life is messy, cluttered, disorganized."
I have found this book extremely helpful for my own life. I also gave it to someone I love who was going through a crisis and she too gained much insight and strength in it's pages.
The chapters are short & easy to read and, best of all, summarized by an easily remembered amorphism at the end of each chapter, such as:
If it happened once, I can change so that it doesn't happen again.
I don't forgive to absolve others. I forgive to set myself free.
I ignore success. I pursue dreams.

I am actually re-reading this book.

  • Baking Cakes in Kigali
    • Rated 4 stars

Set in comtemporary Rwanda, this is a story of how ordinary people continue to live ordinary lives in the midst of the political upheaval & healthy crisis that beset modern day Africa.
Watching Angel, the baker, as she remains generous & kind, helpful and caring in spite of the loss of her own children, rearing her 5 grandchildren and dealing with a myriad of friends and neighbors is watching grace under pressure.
Angel deals with tragedy and heartache with acceptance but not defeat, always taking the time to care about others more than she does about hersefl.

The very commonplace reactions to the gaurds at their buildings protecting the neighborhood, the prevelance of AIDS and shadow of war were jarring to read for my soft American eyes.

I believe if someone is interested in Africa and the current conditions, what life is really like in Rwanda now, this would be a great book to read. It is mild enough for even very young teens, although I don't know how interesting they would find it.

Very good book, I really enjoyed this story of an orphan girl called to the life of a religous order whose life takes many unexpected turns & twists over the course of mid-late 20th century New England.
