I may be 54, but at heart, I'm still a horse-crazy girl. To fill the time between riding lessons, I teach English at Roger Williams University (Bristol, R.I.) and Bristol Community College (Fall River, MA), take care of my birds, gerbils, fish, and husband of 15 years, and read. My favorite kinds of books are murder mysteries and novels,... more »

I like to watch birds, but I wouldn't go to the extremes that some of these people do. This account of their efforts was oddly entertaining despite being a bit too economical in its storytelling; it comes across as being a really long newspaper article. Worth reading for the sake of the information.

What a great read! Highly recommended. I'm definitely going to have to read more books featuring this character! I might even try reading some of Connelly's other books.

I'd give this one a C+; this writer may be "award-winning," but I noticed several confusing sentences...also, the plot was fairly predictable and no foreshadowing used where it would have come in handy. Overall, interesting enough to get through, but not high on the list of good writing or story-telling.

Disappointing read--a "book within a book" set-up, with the eponymous text taking the bulk of the novel. Too bad this text, which is a "lost manuscript" for the main character, has very little to do with the main character's own story. In other words, it's missing a sense of purpose beyond some parallels to her life. I've read other "lost manuscript" novels, and in them, the manuscript usually reveals some deep, dark, devastating family secret. Not in this case. The entire novel seems to be the author trying to answer the question, who had it worse in bygone society--homosexuals or unwed mothers? There's a murder within the story, but it seems almost incidental to the rather tedious telling of events. Could have been a much more interesting story, but it isn't.

I was delightfully surprised to see this on the shelf at B & N yesterday--I'd loved the previous book, The Whistling Season, which introduced the character Morgan "Morrie" Llewellen. This story was just as fun to read. Now I can't wait to see whether there will be another one!

This is a fantastic read! I'd even say this is George's best one ever. Because of its tight plot, interesting characters, fascinating relationships, and its lack of overwhelming introspection (a weakness in her previous novels, this story is a can't-put-it-down "must read." Fabulous!

Even though I still miss the real Dick Francis-style writing, this latest effort by Felix Francis kept me interested. Obviously well researched, the book kept me entertained, even though sometimes the information seems to be included just for its own sake. The actual "mystery" part wasn't terribly gripping, but Felix Francis' writing seems to be improving overall; this one was quite readable. Now if only he would stop riding on his father's coattails by putting "Dick Francis" on the covers!

A nice light read that felt a bit "Guy Noir"-ish.

I enjoyed reading this mystery, especially at the beginning where the identity of the killer hasn't been revealed yet and there's some confusion as to who it might be. Interesting characters. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I had a hard time putting this down. I will definitely be reading more of his stuff, even though the technical sailing terms were unknown to me.
