I grew up in Europe, in a country filled with superstition and beliefs of the old and where the tales meant to frighten children all hold a semblance of truth. The stories I write hold that essence, where the darkness of life borders on the edge of sunset and where the dead savor or regret those long and lonely hours until the sun rises on the... more »

stumbled across a stunning new author by the name of Lori Pescatore. Ms. Pescatore wrote Human Blend, an enthralling sci-fi/paranormal novel. Fast paced and thrilling, Human Blend centers on Laney and the secrets of her past, which is horrifying. Changing her name to Julie, she has an extraordinary gift that sets her apart from those in her world, as well as a past that makes her seek comfort in the shadows on a small town in Virginia.

Life is never simple though, especially when Julie meets Austin. Ignoring her deeper instincts, Julie is fascinated by the young man, until Eli enters her life. Two men, one woman, and a world of supernatural secrets burst from the pages in this novel! Ms. Pescatore’s characters are well developed and convincing in their portrayals. This story can extend to both sides of the reading audience, from the YA to the more mature who simply enjoy a fascinating tale. I found the thrilling tale of Human Blend a delightful read filled with very human conflict, realistic dialogue, and I’m so pleased to have found this new author!

    Shattered Glass

Shattered Glass is not a novel that anyone should expect to read quickly.
Emotional and draining, this is an intense read that leaves the reader aching. How so, you might ask? The novel begins with the story of a young Liam, who realizes he’s attracted to one boy and his overwhelming desire to be in a stellar band. Unfortunately, the vindictive rage of one will tear Liam’s love from him and nearly destroy his dreams.
From there, I was drawn into a tragic and depressing world. Granted, I know the world of Rock and Roll isn’t all glamor and stars, but Milo and Liam’s story brings the ugliness to light. Their shattered love, and moments of unbelievable mistrust(brought on by vicious lies and a bully that should have been beaten by his own victims), are aching and makes the reader want to scream and shout. Shattered Glass is a tale that makes one wonder if there can be love after so much anger and mistrust.
Take a week and read this book, but be prepared for tears, anger, and outrage. Despite the intensity of this m/m romance, the novel is rewarding and worth every moment of anguish and celebration.

  • Lure of the Vampire: A Pop Culture Reference Book of Lists, Websites, and Very Telling Essays
    • Rated 4 stars

I have to admit, the cover had me!

As a fan of vampires, I found Lure of the Vampire an educational expedition through the ever-changing fascination with the undead. Since the origins of the creatures that haunt our nightmares, or capture our hearts, tales of the vampire have fascinated the world. If you check your lore of numerous regions throughout the globe, vampires exist in all shapes and form. They pull us into their darkness, with promises that cannot be ignored, and we allow them to do so.

The Lure of the Vampire is all-encompassing, from the moment that Bram Stoker put pen to paper. As readers and movie viewers, we shuddered with Mina, wondered about Lucy, and succumbed to the charms of that devilish vixen from Underworld. No longer do we envision a vampire with the gothic past of Nosferatu, nor do we sympathize with Vlad Dracul, but their legend lives on. Perhaps the legend in itself offers the immortality the undead crave, and Ms. Varney has made Lure of the Vampire a must have for all fascinated readers.

Ms. Varney has dedicated an immense amount of time to the study of this fascination, as well as the history surrounding the all time King of the Undead, making this quintessential book for all vampire lovers~

Valentina Kureyev, like her father, is a police detective and also like her father is attached to the neighborhood of Little Europe. A monster is stalking inhabitants of the area and killing them in a particularly horrible way. She has to find and stop him.

Baron Demetri Petronov was a rake and a woman predictably caused his downfall. Now he is a vampire and though cursed tries not to be as evil as his reputation would suggest.

A bloodthirsty monster is stalking the streets and alleys of Little Europe. A priest brings together the unlikely team of a police detective and a vampire in the hopes that the team will be enough to eliminate the evil that threatens them.

This is a very suspenseful tale of two unlikely partners investigating a series of horrible murders. Demetri is a very sophisticated and well mannered vampire and I enjoyed the interplay between him and the foul mouthed detective. Valentina is small but tough and determined to save her neighborhood and the city of the evil that threatens it. The development of the relationship between the two is deftly done. The author creates an ominous and almost oppressive atmosphere that is perfect for the story. The building tension and suspense made it almost impossible for me to put this one down until the last page.
