I am a new author in the Christian Fiction field. I write and love to read romance/adventure books. My first book, FULL DISCLOSURE, came out in July '06, followed by ABANDONED IDENTITY, in July '07. ABANDONED IDENTITY was featured with the Crossings book club where it stayed at #1 on the suspense charts for five weeks. CRIMINAL OBSESSION was... more »

    Angel Train

    by Gilbert Morris
    • Rated 3 stars

ANGEL TRAIN is part of the Wagon Wheel series by Gilbert Morris. And though I enjoyed it, many parts of the book seems predictable and similar to the other stories in the series.
The plight of the small Pennsylvania community called Pilgrim’s Way has fallen on hard times. With the coal mine so many of the countrymen depend on closing, they feel desperate to find a solution. When Charity Morgan hears of the free land being offered in Oregon, she feels she has found that solution. The only problem . . . finding someone to lead them. When visiting her uncle, a prison warden, she finds her man in inmate Casey Tremayne. Casey, along with a ragtag group of criminals agrees to take the Pilgrim’s Way group to Oregon with the promise they will be paroled if the group arrives safely. The attraction between Charity and Casey is immediate, though they both do what they can to ignore their feelings. The journey to Oregon is not without its trails and losses. But the end proves rewarding for both the travelers and the inmates.
I enjoyed the entire series. But by the fourth book with similar story lines, it became a bit old.

  • Stranger In The Night
    • Rated 3 stars

STRANGER IN THE NIGHT tracks the work of Liz Wallace as she helps place refugees in St. Louis, and Joshua Duff, an ex-marine as he works with his friends at Haven, an inner-city youth center. There attraction for each other is immediate, though neither is willing to admit it.
Things heat up at Haven, and Liz and Joshua work together to find what it is that’s started rival gangs to center on Haven. The more Liz and Joshua work together, the more they push each other way. Their goals are different, but the same. They want to help others, even if that means they can’t be together.
STRANGER IN THE NIGHT had a unique setting and a unique storyline, but the constant back and forth as Joshua and Liz struggle with their feelings gets irritating over time. I love the pull and tug of a good romance, but I feel in STRANGER IN THE NIGHT it is abused and does an injustice to the story and frustrates the reader, at least this reader. But even with this negative, the positive is that the story does keep you involved until the very end.

  • No Place for a Lady: A Novel
    • Rated 3 stars

NO PLACE FOR A LADY is speaking of Crystal Clark, a Southern belle who’s just arrived on her Aunt’s ranch in Colorado. From their first meeting, Crystal and Luke Weber, the ranch foremen, rub each other the wrong way. What follows is the typical formula for a Historical romance; brooding rancher, annoying female, and a tragedy that forces them to work together.
I enjoyed NO PLACE FOR A LADY. Though it didn’t have the caliber of suspense I like in a romance novel, and I found myself breezing over some of the more descriptive sections that slowed down the story, it still kept my interest until the end.

  • Breach of Trust (Call of Duty Series, Book 1)
    • Rated 5 stars

BREACH OF TRUST by DiAnn Mills is an incredible page-turner. For those of you who like action and suspense along with your romance, this book is for you.
Paige Rogers, an ex-CIA operative, now lives as the Librarian in the small town of Split Creek, Oklahoma . . . but not by choice. Her choices were removed eight years ago by a mission gone wrong and an operative gone bad. Today, she does all she can to keep the regrets that haunt her at bay while carrying on a mild manner existence.
Miles Laird, football coach for the Split Creek Bobcats, knows there is more to Paige than meets the eye, and continues his plan to wear her down and make her admit she is as interested in him as he is in her.
When a stranger in town harasses Paige, she realizes the sleeping dog from her past has raised his ugly head again. Everyone around her will soon be a target unless she can smoke out her adversary and force him to make a wrong move. In the meantime, her heart is not cooperating. Her feelings for Miles run deep . . . deep enough to hurt him when he finds out the truth.
I can’t even begin to touch on all the twists and turns in BREACH OF TRUST. It is a captivating story with suspense, intrigue, romance, and a pulling at your heart at the decisions Paige must make to keep those she loves safe. I anxiously await BREACH OF SECURITY in the Spring of 2010.

A BRIDE IN THE BARGAIN by Deeanne Gist was so enjoyable, I read it in less than eight hours. Set in 1860’s Seattle, Anna Ivey is leaving the East Coast after the War Between the States has robbed her of her family. Destitute and working for the strong-handed Hoke, she decides traveling to the West is the fresh start she needs. Answering an ad in the local paper, she signs on to travel to Seattle to be a cook for a logging camp. Once there, she finds out her contract reads much different from that of Joe Denton’s, the man she is to work for.
Joe Denton is about to lose half of what he has worked over ten years for. When he was given the land grant of 640 acres in the Seattle, Washington area, he was married, but he headed to his new land alone so he could establish it before sending for his wife. Unfortunately, his wife died before she could make the trip and as the land grant stipulates, single men only were to receive 320 acres. With the possibility of losing half of what he has slaved over for the last several years, he has no choice but to find himself a wife, and fast. When he reads of Asa Mercer’s plan to go to the East and bring back widows and orphans suitable enough for marriage, he signs on. The fact that he finds out Ana Ivey can cook is just an extra bonus.
While Anna agrees to be his cook, she has no intentions of marrying Joe Denton. Though she finds him attractive and caring, she feels she has brought death to the ones she loves and vows never to marry. Joe can’t understand Ivey’s misgivings about marriage as he sees his time running out. He must convince her to marry or lose the land he loves. But he soon learns he could lose much more.
I thoroughly enjoyed A BRIDE IN THE BARGAIN. Ms. Gist pushed the envelope in the areas of attraction and being chaste in a conservative time. But I feel that is what will set this novel apart from the everyday Christian/Historical. Exploring the attraction that both Anna and Joe had for each other gave realism to their characters. Lets face it . . . though these characters are Christians, they’re still human. To write them as a man and woman without desire for the opposite sex insults the reader. Overall, a very entertaining story with great characters. Oh– and I also found the historical side of the novel quite interesting.

LOVE FINDS YOU IN LONESOME PRAIRIE MONTANA, part of the Love finds you series, was a sweet story with a sweet heroine. Julia Cavanaugh finds herself accompanying the orphan girls she has raised as they find new homes and new families in the West. Once arriving in Lonesome Prairie, Julia finds not only has Mrs. Hamlin, the mistress she works for, arranged for the placement of these orphans, but she has also taken it upon herself to arrange for Julia to marry a local miner. Julia is aghast at the idea and does all she can to stop the Horace’s pursuing ways while struggling with leaving her little ones in the care of others. But soon, Julia finds that Lonesome Prairie isn’t that bad . . . either is Parson Ike. She struggles with her infatuation for a man that shows no interested in her at all. But somehow, it is him who fills her daydreams.
Parson Ike, or Isaac has more than noticed Julia, but has vowed to stay single so he can continue to put all his efforts in his position as a circuit riding pastor. He’s made his mind up to remain single, but is having a hard time convincing his heart.
LOVE FINDS YOU IN LONESOME PRAIRIE MONTANA, is a simple story of love, family, sacrifice, and devotion. It’s a quiet story in that there are no rustlers, shootouts, or high drama at every turn. Though the outcome of Mabelina’s trial brings some suspense, the rest of the story seems to unfold at a carefree pace. I am not a fan of love story’s that keep the hero and heroine apart for the majority of the story. True, absences makes the heart grow fonder, but I would prefer to see these characters discover and develop a relationship with each other in something other than their thoughts and dreams.

  • Eye for an Eye, An: A Novel (Heroes of Quantico)
    • Rated 5 stars

Irene Hannon has done it again. AN EYE FOR AN EYE, the second book in the Heroes of Quantico series, continues where AGAINST ALL ODDS leaves off.
Mark Sanders, a member of the FBI Hostage Rescue Team finds himself in St. Louis recovering from an accidental shooting. While he debates his future and the emotional fallout from a botched rescue attempt, he runs into Emily Lawson, his childhood sweetheart. Their chance meeting in a park turns from nostalgia to sniper fire. Both Emily and Mark are hit, but evade the shooter. The only question now is . . . who was the shooter’s intended target?
As Mark takes all necessary precautions to keep Emily safe, Emily does the same with her wounded heart. Both Mark and Emily feel the attraction they once had for each other, but for Emily it is a feeling she knows she must ignore. She took a chance on love once and lost her firefighter husband in the line of duty. She refuses to open up her heart once again to a man who puts his life on the line every day. Mark feels Emily’s apprehension and deals with some of his own, but he knows logic will not have the final say. He is falling in love with Emily all over again, but will he be able to keep her safe? Will he and Emily find love again?
AN EYE FOR AN EYE is a great follow-up to AGAINST ALL ODDS. I don’t care how old the damsel in distress plot is. When written this masterfully it is anything but boring.

  • Against All Odds (Heroes of Quantico Series, Book 1)
    • Rated 5 stars

WOW! I can’t believe I found an author I like as much as Dee Henderson. AGAINST ALL ODDS has everything anyone who likes Christian/Romance/Suspense is looking for.
When Evan “Coop” Cooper, a member of the FBI Hostage Rescue Team, is assigned to protect Monica Callahan–a woman who doesn’t want anyone interfering in her life– sparks fly. Those sparks ignite something deep inside Coop. But with Monica’s safety on the line, he ignores his personal feelings even though he knows he is falling in love with Monica.
Monica, estranged from her father, is angered that her world has been turned upside down. But when she realizes the threat against her life is for real, she relies on Coop to keep her safe. What she’s not ready for is the way Coop has invaded every part of her world, including her heart.
Irene Hannon has masterfully weaved a story filled with intriguing suspense and dramatic romance. Her characters are rich and warm, and the banter between them as they try to deny their feelings for each other is what keeps you turning page after page. AGAINST ALL ODDS will definitely be cataloged as one of my favorites.

  • The Bride Backfire (Prairie Promises)
    • Rated 3 stars

THE BRIDE BACKFIRE by Kelly Eileen Hake is an enjoyable historical with touches of humor and plenty of drama.
Opal Speck wants nothing more than to prevent bloodshed and hold off the feud that has plagued the Specks and the Grogans for generations. When Adam Grogan crosses territorial lines, the Speck men are looking for revenge. But Opal, cannot allowed Adam – the man that saved her life two years ago–to be the victim of the ridiculous feud. She knows of only one way to save him . . . tell her family that she is carrying Adam’s child.
What follows is a shotgun wedding, vindictive threats, a well kept secret, and the possibility of love to bloom between two families of hatred.
I enjoyed THE BRIDE BACKFIRE, but the pulling and tugging between Adam and Opal got a bit tiresome over time. Midge – Opal’s best friend added a good dimension to the story, and of course, Mrs. Grogan was every daughter-in-law’s nightmare. Overall, a good story that reads at a casual pace.

  • Double Cross: A Novel

    Double Cross: A Novel

    by James David Jordan
    • Rated 5 stars

I have been waiting a year to read DOUBLE CROSS by James David Jordan. And can I say . . . It was definitely worth the wait!
The sequel to FORSAKEN, DOUBLE CROSS continues the story of Taylor Pasbury, ex-secret service turned private security agent. In FORSAKEN, Taylor is left devastated by the death of Simon Mason, a televangelist she was hired to protect, but whose relationship turned into so much more. In DOUBLE CROSS, we see the incredible bond Taylor has forged with Mason’s daughter, Kacey. We also watch as Taylor struggles with her new-found Christianity. In her heart or hearts she wants to live a redeemed life as a testament to Mason’s impact on her life. But old habits die hard and she finds herself continuing to struggle with personal choices.
Things quickly heat up when Elise Hovden, Simon’s former top assistant is found dead by apparent suicide. But it doesn’t add up to Taylor. Yes, Elise was about to turn herself in for embezzlement, and was emotionally distraught over Simon’s death, but why would she arrange for a meeting with Taylor if she was just going to off herself? Instinctively, Taylor does some digging. And what she finds out is more than she bargained for. Add that together with the reappearance of her mother that abandoned her at the age of nine, and Taylor soon finds herself on overload with a killer close on her heels.
I don’t know what it is about Jordan’s writing that so thoroughly captives me, but it does. Normally drawn to the romance genre, I always wish for more to happen romantically in Taylor’s life, but I’m never disappointed with the story. FORSAKEN is a great novel for both the male and female reader. Kudos to James David Jordan. He’s done it again!
