"Nothing gives me the feeling of having been born several decades too late quite like the modern 'literary' best seller. Give me a time-tested masterpiece or what critics patronizingly call a fun read—Sister Carrie or just plain Carrie. Give me anything, in fact, as long as it doesn't have a recent prize jury's seal of approval on... more »

Did you get a copy of Habibi? It's fun to say! I guess a fast semester beats a slow one. Things here are hectic but mostly well (dealing with a lot of family health stuff this year, but nothing dire... ). Job seems to hang on every budget battle, stop-gap measure, and fiduciary game of brinksmanship, but Uncle Sam has been a gracious employer these past 9 years, so a little turbulence is a small price to pay.

I was gonna surprise you a few weeks ago and get you a signed copy of Craig Thompson's newest graphic novel when I saw him at the Small Press Xpo in Bethesda MD, but I'm glad I kept my mouth shut because I got there just as they shut down the line for autographs and the book was selling for $100 (since it was part of a fundraiser and they were advanced copies from the publisher). So I went home and pre-ordered it from Amazon for $25. It's gorgeous. Have you picked up a copy yet? Hope all is well and that the fall semester is rolling along smoothly.

Well, our communication efforts aren't top notch but we do try, don't we! You asked where I was teaching...it's a volunteer school for refugees, now all from Bhutan by way of the camps in Nepal. We have, give or take, around 40 students most days, some of who (whom?) are learning sewing in one classroom while 3-4 others and I work on literacy and cultural issues in another. I love them and I love working with them. Most of them attend at least two different schools/classes every day, very motivated folks, also kind and generous.

I went back and reread another Pym last week, nice visit with old friends. I've been sporadically (I don't always feel like thinking) reading David Brooks' Social Animal, which is, by fits and starts, interesting. His politics suck but at least he's thoughtful and doesn't seem overtly pernicious. Also sporadically, The Inheritance of Loss. I've also been on a binge of reading Indian writers.

I am in A Mood today, feeling deprived because I was never seduced in my youth by an older-but-still-handsome Chinese son of a wealthy family and also because I missed Shanghai and Vietnam in the 30's, all that moss and those cafes and general decadence. It's probably this rain.

    *howling while reading below*
I've got to begin w/ telling you that G has taught himself how to use our scanner! I mentioned to him our "conversation" in BBD & heard him calling to me yesterday afternoon that he'd figured it out. Motivation?! Looks like the teacher is still in me! He was so proud to show me how to do it, too. Course, he still swears he didn't throw out the manual. Uh huh, like I believe that.

G's finally found a job! In fact, he had 3 offers in 2 weeks. Weird, huh?! The one he chose will require him to be out of town Mon.-Thurs., but close enough he could get back quickly if he needed to. We know the owners & worked w/ them on several jobs in the islands & consider them friends. That's good because they understand my medical situation & why G may need to be home in the coming weeks. That's one worry to cross off the list. :) I've given up my search because I can't imagine going for interviews in the midst of treatments. And too, I'm thinking of returning to teaching...I have to go back to school & take 16 credits to have my certification reissued. But my heart has missed it for the past 10 years & I think it's the right decision for me. And too, who else wants to hire a 55 yo woman? (Even though I'm told I look 45, LOL)

I know how you feel about the Sookie books!! They're just mindless, escapist fun! I haven't seen the show since I started reading the books & we cancelled HBO as one of our cost-cutters. The only things I liked about it were the opening credits & the music. I'm biting my tongue to tell you about future books & what happens. Quinnn...yuck, although now that G is experiencing some follicle challenges, I don't mind baldness nearly as much as I used to. Ahhh, Eric...sigh I've always been partial to big blonds.

Another pile for me?! *dancing around the house* No, I haven't read One Day but if you liked it, I'm sure I'm will. By the way, I'm also reading Ms. Hempel Chronicles & lurrvvving it. Such a sweet, gentle little story full of luscious descriptions. Bynum perfectly described my feelings teaching. It's bringing back many memories.

Oh, your uni email is the shape of things to come, isn't it?! *shudders* Enjoy your free time while you can!! I used to feel I'd reverted back to my teen years, too, during the summer. LOL at your description!

Hot here?! Jesus Christ in a speedo, it's beyond hot! Three digit temps have become common & none of the fur babies want to go outside. Most of the plants in my gardens are drought resistant but not for temps this high so they're fading before their time. We did get the best tomatoes we've ever had this summer. For a few weeks we ate tomatoes at every meal & it was pure nirvana.

I haven't been crocheting or knitting this summer but am looking forward to it this fall. I've been on a sewing spree! Churning out clothes for me & sewing mother-daughters outfits for my niece & her girls. Also, aprons (I feel you rolling your eyes!) for everyone. They're cat lovers & I found a pattern for kids & adults that features kitty faces. It's a lot cuter than it sounds! I'm making a tuxeo-apron for my niece's hubby & a little tuxedo for the newest baby, a boy born in June. I also found one that has a giant shoe for a friend whose last name is Shoe. Getting ready for Christmas, don't ya know...Your baby blanket sounds lovely. I love making those because they work up so fast.

Oh lordy, do I like chocolate chip cookies?! *wiping drool off the keyboard* YES!!! I would consider it my duty to help you eat a few. I mean, what are friends for?

Try to find a good hiding place before school starts....

Just stopped by to see how your summer is humming along...I found a used bookstore today & got my mitts on Dead Reckoning, the latest Sookie. *jumping up & down* Once I read it, it will be flying its way to you. I might keep Eric here though...hope you don't mind. ;p

Prepare to give up your day to them until you finish the bloomin' thing. We just arrived today at the in-law's house in Virginia. There's nothing to do here except sleep, eat, read, repeat. In other words, bliss.

I should finish Miss Peregrine tonight...I have about 40 pages to go. I think it would make a nice Halloween read:) It's very unusual...and it's definitely creepy at times. I almost didn't order it but I read a sample of the first two chapters and was hooked. The pictures are great - so is the way they are used. Ransom Riggs is a clever man.

The Enchanted April. Other than that, I've not finished anything in a long, long time. It seems that the stress of hubby's lack of work is visiting itself upon me now that the trouble has passed rather than whilst it was occurring. I'm rather like Hester Prynne -- I didn't know the wait until I felt the freedom. This too shall pass, and I'm sure I'll be back to reading sometime soon.

And I think you're right about Mr. B. He seems bright enough, he just lacks focus, which seems to be very typical for boys. He's made great strides and loves all of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books. Heaven knows that we'd stand on our heads and recite Japanese if that's what would help him.

We are planning a trip to VA to see hubby's family at the end of July. At least there's fresh crab in my future, and that ain't bad.

Haven't seen the show. Thought the first one entertaining but not enough so to continue (mind you, I'm a little serialized out having let my son talk me into Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Percy Jackson, and Harry Potter; I'm just finishing up the latter which I've enjoyed a lot, but I'm yearning to break free of anything that is multi-volume!). I liked the characters a lot and thought Martin was setting up a rather interesting set of dynamics. The nonstop groping and suckling baby dragons was a bit much for me to swallow ; )

Oh no, mine still have the list of followers. And yet we still cannot edit our posts to one another. Grrrrr.

Summer is busy. Mr. B is going to tutoring three times a week for two hours each time, which means that Mommy spends an awful lot of time sitting at Corner Bakery or Barnes & Noble. He's had a little more difficulty with reading than he should, compounded by the fact that his teacher, who has a terminally ill child, was in and out all year. Still, summer is much more carefree than the school year.

Hope you're sitting someplace cool with a tall frosted glass of something.

Checking in to see how your summer is going...I'm sure you're missing your students & the faculty meetings & the constant workload....NOT ;p

Just finished Agatha's Murderous Marriage & your copy of Agatha's Terrible Tourist. Good gravy, I wish she'd drop kick James to the curb! He's such a pompous, obnoxious arse! I loved the scenes of Turkey & all of its sights & it mades me want to visit one day. Perhaps we should have a Bi*tch field trip. I bet Dragonfly would go, too. ;0)

I have a job interview this week!! It's at a local college's library as an administrative asssitant. Filling out the job application was like applying to grad school all over again, LOL. They had essay questions which I dutifully & inventively answered w/ my glass (or 12) of wine by my hand.

And finally...I have a biopsy scheduled for Thurs. I'm a little scared.

Are you out of school now? School is still going on here bec. of so many snow days. It was a godawful winter and I'm still just jumping up and down when the sun comes out! My daughter said she saw light coming in her bedroom window one morning and thought it was the mother ship! My son got us a Kindle for Christmas. I still have five stacks (I counted) of books next to my bed but the Kindle is fun at times. I like being able to order a book and have it downloaded in seconds!! I'm not shallow enough (yet?) to actually require instant gratification but it's cool when it happens. Just got Between the Assassinations by the guy whose names both begin with A (betrayed by my rogue brain yet again) and he won a Man Booker for The White Tiger. Yes, Jill's preacher series gave me the willies--just knowing those guys are out there! Gaah!! Sort of like certain politicians. I don't trust my fellow Americans any more, Afton. I look at everyone now like "Are you one of THEM???" It's like we had this wave of stupidity that now is a tsunami. I used to be such a kind, naive little person....
