Me am swankivy. Among other things, I am a writer, a daughter, a sister, an editor, a webmistress, an artist, a singer, and an administrative assistant. I will kick your butt in a game of ping-pong.

I like corn.

I'm a graduate of a four-year college. Degree is elementary education. Not too happy about it as I never wanted to... more »

Being the kids' department head when I worked at a bookstore, I saw these books a lot in my chapter books section and decided to see if they were any good so I could decide whether to recommend them to others. They had a surprising amount of somewhat off-color jokes in them, but other than that they were cute but nothing super-special. I just read a few during my lunch break; they take about ten minutes to read.

Great book on the lore, recipes, and rituals of this time of year.

It's very different. That's all I can say without really diving into explaining why. You'll like the characters and definitely feel after reading it that you don't know anyone who writes like Mr. Pinkwater.

The sequel to Bloodsucking Fiends did not disappoint. The ending was unexpected and I want a third book because I don't like the idea of things ending up that way, but as usual Christopher Moore was hilarious and very original with his different characters. And I'll say one thing: The man can really rustle up a good insult. I'm going to have to use some of these.

    Ya Yas in Bloom

Another series of interrelated short stories, like Little Altars Everywhere, involving the same characters we got to know in the earlier books but skipping around to anecdotal periods in their lives. I liked it, but I hope sometime soon Ms. Wells tries her hand at another full-on sequential novel.

I'd never read it and wanted to know the story. It was really kinda shocking. So much hate and discontent and wickedness and ugliness in what is ultimately a love story. It's almost violent with its passion. I really liked it.

I think the art in these books is really nice. This one was kinda dark--that kid killed baby dragons by stepping on them. It still bugs me that the house brownie talks in pseudo-rhymes. I certainly wouldn't suggest this series as required reading or anything, but it held my attention.

  • Woman in Front of the Sun: On Becoming a Writer
    • Rated 3 stars

A nice biographical collection of stories about one woman's growth as a writer: Inspiration, culture, roots, and influences, plus what writing means. Quite beautiful.

  • Wizard's Holiday

Book seven of Young Wizards did not disappoint--the usual wonderful epic-yet-personal adventure. Kit and Nita are off on a "vacation" to a strange alien world, while Nita's sister Dairine has to deal with the alien exchange students sent in their place. Wonderfully and powerfully written, as always.

  • The Wizard's Dilemma
    • Rated 5 stars

The Wizard's Dilemma covers a battle with cancer, and what Nita and her partner can do to beat it without paying too high a price. The tale of sacrifice and trial and determination was absolutely incredible! And the ending . . . poignant, and just completely heartbreaking while still making it clear why it happened this way. I love when the quest isn't clear-cut and when a book can sometimes show where losing is winning.
