I enjoyed the deepening mystery of the revenants and Cassie's father. The main story was fun fan service that felt like a Buffy plot on Showtime. Not to say any of that is bad.

Not as great as the first book. The mystery of the house is teased, but not revealed any further. There is a circular adventure against an antlered monster, the purpose of which I am still uncertain. The side stories were not as good this time either. 2 out of 5 good asides. The mood and atmosphere is still wonderful and I do believe we will get a better reveal soon.

A heist gone wrong book in the middle of Katrina, but also a deeper metaphor working on at least 3 levels about the tragedy of Katrina. A very well done book.

Somewhat fun, but ultimately too short and forgettable. It flt like when you are a kid and you copy the great movie you just saw with your toys at home. Mignola did the same thing with his toys, he even admits as much in the brief introduction. Nothing special happens here and I doubt I will ever be revisiting it.

A flashback story that fills in the gaps between when Cassie left her mother and met Vlad. Your typical Buffy plot with the gore amped up. Very fun.

The first story was great and a really clever idea, but the second, longer story was cliched and a little trite at this point. I hope they get fresher ideas going forward, or at least creative spins.

Better than the last book, this started to have longer stories and more continuity. I love a lot of the places this is going. It is clear that the writers love slasher films and are trying to deconstruct as well as apply many of the basic formula elements. My only complaint is that the art is very uneven throughout, even in sections of the same story.

This shows a lot of promise. It is not just the Buffy the Vampire Slayer rip-off I had anticipated. It explores new ground as far as slashers being a monster in their own right with all of the lore and tropes intact. Everything about this was very fun, if a little simple. I am hoping that it gets less episodic in the next installment.

  • Hawkman: Allies & Enemies (Book 2)

I do not know much about Hawkman, and I only read this because of Geoff Johns. This taught me very little about Hawkman and as far as Geoff Johns' writing, this was a pretty run of the mill story.

Some good stories, some mediocre rehashes of familiar King themes. I love The Langoliers and everything about it. I found Secret Window to be ok, but seemed familiar (no I have not seen the film). The Library Policeman was tedious and the resolution felt like a weak rehash of an old King theme. The Sun Dog started off like a harmless old Goosebumps story, but went in a very fun direction and turned out to be my second favorite story in the collection.
