Elki Armagh

Ever since I could read (I started at the age of three), I would fall asleep with a book or two, or ten, close by my head. I would imagine their words whispering their promises of great and fantastic adventures in my youthful and naïve ears. But the selection of the literature I chose from my local library troubled my mother, the far-away... more »

    Elki,

Well, you don't have to worry if it takes week or a month to write back. I appreciate that you write back. And anyway, I like people who are actually capable of disconnecting themselves from this thing called computer(though for a short time). They are the only proof that people(better put, humans) used to live their lives in merriment even when there was no internet :)

I hate how much I depend on my computer. Makes me feel I'm less of a human. Ha! Well, apart from that I love the things and people I discover through it.

I appreciate your struggle. Writing is a difficult profession. But of course, not for the people who can think of doing nothing except expressing themselves in words, ideas, philosophies and fictions. You are always free to reach out to me for any opinions on your writings, if you feel I'll be helpful.

I'm trying to summarize my recent trip to UK for an article. Scotland has to be the most scenic place I've visited on earth yet. Traveling is good for retaining your inner intellect(I mean to say 'soul' but its too vague to use). I so closely missed the Pearl Jam concert. I somehow enjoy P.G.Wodehouse's books much better after actually having strolls on London streets.

Keep looking around and dramatizing! It'll surely be interesting to see the results.

I'm not angry. I haven't been getting on Shelfari as much as I used to anymore either. Either I don't have time, or I really don't feel like it.

Good luck with your permit! I've studied for it, but I haven't been motivated to actually go and get it. My friends and family always make fun of me for that : ( And I know how you feel. My little sister will do the same thing to me.

We went to a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. We stopped at Nassau, San Juan, St. Thomas, and Tortola. We were supposed to go to Antigua too, but there were a lot of tropical storms going on during the cruise. So they had to change the course a lot. But it was still fun. We went to this place in San Juan where you can kayak at night. They take you to this bay where when you disturb the water with your hand, these little organisms glow green. But you had to go through these mangroves to get there, so me and my sister kept getting hit by branches. People kept falling off their kayaks (thank God me and my sister didn't), and then my parents had to get towed back part of the way by one of the guides because my Dad was starting to cramp up or something. It was lot's of fun though )and even more fun to watch my parents, lol).

That's cool. But I'm not much of a writer.

I can't take Twitter seriously, lol. I guess it would be helpful to you, but not so much for me. Baby-proofing your house can be dangerous?

Awwww, I'm blushing. lol. I promise, I am part of the female gender.

Good luck with job hunting, again. What I don't get is how all the sort of "slackers" (or that's how they sort of present themselves to me) at school get such great jobs. Seriously, the one girl got a job at Best Buy! How did that happen? I do little things here and there for money, but I think next year I'm going to seriously start looking for a job. I figure I should enjoy being a kid while it lasts right? Because once I start working, I'll probably never stop.

I know how you feel. I'd love to be a writer, but when I read certain books, I just can't picture myself doing something like that. They use a great variety of words (many I would never think to use), they write so well (I can't write without sounding like, well,....a teenager. Who would have guessed?), and the ideas they come up with for books are so great. I'm really just not that creative. But don't worry, I'm sure your writing will get even better over time.

I haven't been visiting Shelfari as much as I usually do actually. I've been busy with reading (The Mortal Instruments Series, which is awesome!), studying for my permit (finally), summer reading for school, and I've just been out with friends and family a lot lately. Then we're going on vacation next week to one of the beaches over here, and we're going on a cruise in August.

Wait, what do you do on goodreads? I actually had a twitter for a day. I got one, thought it was stupid, and then spent the next day trying to find out how to delete it.

Don't worry about answering asap. Take as long as you need. I feel so special though. You miss talking with me?....really!?!?! lol.

I've started looking too. But I'm not sure I'll be getting one soon. My friend's been applying like crazy for the past year, and he still hasn't gotten a job. Hopefully you'll have better luck.

As one of my friend says, "Life's mad on planet earth."
You've to earn money but the most difficult way to do that is by doing what you like. I guess, this is what you mean. This is exactly what this book 'Fountainhead' is about. I'm still in its last few pages and still contained in its aura. So, don't mind if my views seem too biased towards that book. After all, some books do affect us in some ways :) You should read it someday.

Thanks for the advice but, as you say, such a thing is inevitable. So if I do pick three books at a time I make sure one is a collection of short stories, another one a fantasy and the third an engrossing philosophy or murder. That way I try to keep it balanced. But yes, it often turns out to be a mess.

It doesn't matter that you took long to respond, in fact, I didn't expect anyone will respond to that post of mine. Yes, people never really do express anymore. What they do is just stare and build prejudices. I don't mind people anymore(well, its quite a serious statement to state :P).

Dorian Gray, oh that poor boy. A lot many people do not agree with Oscar Wilde's views in that book. I've seen many people disapproving it but the best thing about Oscar, as I see, was that he wrote, just wrote. I don't think he ever thought what people will think about his book or a particular line he has written. He simply expressed.

Writers, such dramatics. True. After all, you all've evolved from them :)

    Elki,
I'm reading a book called 'Fountainhead' by Ayn Rand. I checked your shelf but didn't find it there. So, I'm not sure if you've read it.
For now, I'm totally engrossed, occupied, absorbed, enchanted and influenced by it . The characters hold an ultimate standard of perfection. The intentions are drastic. The philosophy(if it can be called) is dazzling. The society as it portrays is the kind of cruel I've never known. The ones(some of my friends) who've read it say they either preach it or hate it. I've never known any other book to be so controversial except 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde.
I just wanted to express this to someone. I feel better. Some books are written not just brilliantly but incredibly.

This book is really good. It's a fascianting mix of science, religion, history and art. With alot of action thrown in to make you not want to put it down. This book is a great read just as the thriller it is. In my view it has less controversy then The DaVinci Code. I enjoyed it simply as a great adventure story.

Oh, well you didn't specify, I didn't know xD. I'm reading Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic at the moment. I'm on the third (Daja's Book). After I'm going to read The Circle Opens series. Then Ill probably read Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon, and then continue on to her book Forest House. I also have The Tower of Ravens by Kate Forsyth, The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A. McKillip, Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews (which is the second book in the series, so I'm going to pick up the first at the library), Clovermead by David Randall, The Book of Jobe by Mark J Ferrari, Labyrinth by Kate Mosse, and the first three books in the Guenevere Novels by Rosalind Miles.

Not to mention that I want to pick up The Empress's Will by tamora Pierce, and The Melting stones/pot (sp?).

And yes, I've never read any of her books, but it looks like it would be an interesting movie.

I couldn't possibly begin to tell you the titles. At the moment I have a total of 115 books in my "I Plan To Read Section." Which at the moment is more than the amount of books on my "I've Read Section." So, I have a LONG way to go xD.

Oh, It's been doing that to me lately as well. If a book is on my "I Plan To Read" if friends ask opinions on it, it shows up it asks me how I liked it.... Which I obviously can't give an opinion if I haven't read it. I didn't personally ask you, it's just what happens I guess, sorry. I'm in over my head with books to read, I have about 15 books at home I've yet to plow through. But thank you for your recommendation.

My library does not have it. I wish it did. I also get most of my books there. I will probably buy this on ebay or try to get it used.
Ok where is Cow Town in California? I was born and raised in Cali. Lemoore to be precise. Near Fresno. I don't live in Ca anymore.

Lace reader takes place in Salem Mass and is about a women who sees visions via lace. NOt a very good book if you were thinking of reading it. Song of Troy was excellent however.

I do want to read EVe. I just finished a novel about Adam and Eve called Infinity in the Palm of Her Hand. It was beautifully written but Adam was very annoying (as are most men) and the God in this book acts very differently from the God that I believe in. So all in all it was a good book.

I'm about halfway done with my next book, but have been too busy lately to write (we just added another member to the Aicher family). It's written in my head, but not quite finished on paper.

Also, don't worry about "shamelessly promoting" - I really don't think that's the case. I think it's important for me to connect with my readers or potential readers, and really suggest that you do the same thing. It helps a lot to learn from some real, honest, feedback - and you can't get that without a one-on-one relationship.

Speaking of which, thanks for accepting the friend request.

Ah, exams. How I so look forward to mine : (

So Borders must be a pretty big chain of stores (since you live in Washington). Unless it's just in northern states. At our Borders, I haven't met ANY authors. It would be so cool to meet one though. What books has Alice Hoffman written? Neil Gaiman!!!! I haven't read any books by him either. But I think I have one or two books by him on my plan to read list. I actually don't know which author I'd ever like to meet. There are too many to choose from.

I've read Angels and Demons. I loved it, and it was so much better than The DaVinci Code. I just saw the movie version of Angles and Demons this past Sunday. It was pretty good (Tom Hanks is an excellent actor) but it changed a lot of the stuff that was in the book. It even left out the major thing that was part of the plot. Yet they somehow got the story across. If you read the book, you'll find out. The Catholic Church has done a lot of terrible things in the past actually. I think that The DaVinci Code talked more about the free masons. But I'm not sure. I haven't read that book in a while. Or I might just be getting a whole bunch of movies mixed up. lol.

Catherine or Martha? I just know an Enjoumaru. I do think that a lot of people, Enjoumaru included, get a little carried away with posting about how they dislike the books they read. It's like, "yeah, I heard you the first time." I'm tired of not trying to not offend everyone. Tons of people, even my teachers, offend me with their ideas and what they say.

What's so wrong with the Muppets? They're so funny. I'm 16 and I still think they're funny! I know, I'm such a loser. I also watched Barney and Alice in Wonderland. I loved Barney so much, and then my father would always make inappropriate comments about him. I never ask many questions of my family members, because most of the time I know just as much about a subject as they do. Maybe even more. I know, I sound like the typical teenager. But they talk about the same stuff over and over again, and then a lot of the time they're asking me questions. And then I feel bad because when I try to explain things, I feel like I'm trying to explain things to a two-year-old. Seriously though, teens these days know too much.

School over here is, well, school. IT'S ALMOST OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited! I don't know how different our schooling is. What is it like over there for you?

I very rarely read contemporary fiction. I read mostly historical fiction. I do want to read Testimony by Anita Shreve and The Hour I First Believed by Lamb but those are probably it. I did read the Lace Reader last year and was very disappointed in it. What about you what contemp fiction books do you like?
I just started reading The Song of Troy by Colleen McCullough.
