Sunflowery

I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom of four with a direct sales business (kitchen tools). I love to read - currently my favorites are fantasy and science fiction, but I also like mystery and christian fiction. I have read thousands of books, so my bookshelves are continuously being added to (both real and virtual).

This is a very good read-aloud children's Bible. My five- and six-year-old children listened to the selections and understood what was happening.

  • The Snow Queen (Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms, Book 4)
    • Rated 5 stars

The stories of the Five Hundred Kingdoms tell about people that live in a land where magical pressure tries to drive people into "traditional" paths - those stories defined by fairy and folk tales, popular song types, etc. Godmothers are the people who have found a way to guide the pressure and help peoples' lives. In this, the fourth book of the series, Aleksia is the Snow Queen, a Godmother who is thought of in her region as a witch because her particular gift is to take arrogant young men and teach them a lesson about needing others before they have destroyed themselves and those around them. Suddenly, someone else is pretending to be her and she and a strange group have to rescue a good young man and an entire region from the imposter. The twists and tongue-in-cheek look at the fairy tale tradition keep you turning the pages until the end.

I did not care for this book at all. The back of the book claimed it as a funny look at growing up in North Carolina and the life of a transplant to Paris, France, but I found it a disjointed look at one person's craziness. It is full of cursing (which I did not expect), as well as hard drug use. His stories of his parents and school days seem to show a lack of respect for authorities. There were funny moments, but overall I found it distasteful and was thrilled to finish it.

I was quite enthralled with the characters and their dilemmas. I cannot imagine living the life of the family of the terminally ill, and trying to make all the decisions entailed. The twist at the end really surprised me as well. I suppose it fits with the rest of the book, but it's very sad.

The only problem with this children's science book is the fact that some of the information is out-dated - the telephone, television, etc., in the book are several stpes removed from what is actually in most homes these days. The illustrations are well done and the writing is fairly simple for the 5 - 8 year old range. (Although, we were constantly trying to change kph to mph!)

  • The Mystery on Cobbett's Island (Trixie Belden #13)
    • Rated 4 stars

This is an enjoyable mystery set on an island off of New York. I enjoy the nostalgia in re-reading the books I read as a child and look forward to sharing them with my own children when they are old enough. This series is very safe for young minds and fun to read.

This is a really good book - the anguish of the characters as they face an unthinkable ordeal, and the yo-yo of their emotions as they swing from hope to despair and back are well written. The only complaint I truly have is that this is the only book in the series that has no connection to any of the previous books. I highly recommend it, though, and because it has no recurring characters from the series, you may easily read it as a stand-alone book.

I like the setting - as a native Texan, I was fascinated by the thought of being a teenager as Texas fought for its independence from Mexico. Otherwise, it is your fairly typical, young adult romance novel.
